COSMETIC CASE Filed March 9, 1927 Patented Sept. 13, 1927.
UNITED STATES JAMES LESLIE YOUNGHUSBAND, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
' oosMETrc CASE.
Application led March 9, 1927. Serial rN'o.-173,800.
This invention relates to a cosmetic case or compact and more particularly to one of improved construction wherein the casing sections are constructed of a non-metallic product suoli as Celluloid, bakelite, casein composition, or similar material, said sections being held in associated relation by means yof diametric metal straps hinged to one another and held in place on the respective Casing sections by means of wire retaining rings or hoops, thereby providing a cosmetic Container of simplified and inexpensive construction without resorting to thek use of rivets, screws, or other similar retaining means.
It is an object of thisV invention to provide a simplified and inexpensive Cosmetic container or compact wherein the casing sections are preferably constructed of a non-metallic product such as Celluloid and held in associated relation by means .of hingedly connected metal straps heldin place by wire rings with one of said straps Aprovided with an integral latching member adapted to engage one of the retaining rings to hold the compact container locked.
It is also an object o-this invention to provide a compact or cosmetic container with Casing sections adapted to carry a mirror and a cosmetic compact, with said Casing sections connected by means of hinged metal bands and retainingrings adapted to be quickly engaged on the casing sections to form the completed container.
yIt is an important object of this'invention to provide a cosmetic case or holder the body sections of which are constructed of Celluloid or the like, with said sections connected by hinged diametric straps held lin place by wire rings engaged over ythe straps and seated in peripheral grooves formed in `the casing sections.
Other and further important objects of Vthis invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification andthe ac- .Companyingcdrawings Y c This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
' On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top planview of a Cosmetic -'of Celluloid or other suitable material.
case embodying the principles of this vinvention. Y
c Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the case taken on line II-TII of Figure l.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary rear end view of the cosmetic case taken on line III-III of Figure l.
.Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary front view of the device taken on line IV--IV of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a diametric section of a modified form of cosmetic container.
As shown on the drawin The reference numeral 1 indicates a dished or concave bottom or body section constructedfof a non-metallic product, such as celluloid or galalith, which is casein treated with l. formaldehyde and subjected to heavy pres- Removably mounted or` frictionally -suitable material and provided for the purpose ofvholding a cosmetic compact 3 in place. Associated with the bottom casing Vsection 1 is an upper casing section 4 also constructed. of a non-metallic product such as Celluloid. The rim or margin of each of the Casing sections 1 and 4 is slightly curved inwardly to provide a peripheral groove. Mounted in the cover or top Casing section 4 is a mirror 5 frictionally held in place by means of. a retaining ring 6 constructed If desired, a pad 7 may be provided in the top casing section 4 behind the mirror 5. Engaged( diametrically over the top casing section 4 is a metal strap or band 8 the ends of which are bent to Conform to the shape of thegroovedmargin of the top casing section. Integrally formed on one end of the metal strap 8 are a pair of spaced hinge sleeves 9 through which a hinge pin 10 is engaged. Integrally formed on the front or opposite end of thetop strap 8 is a latch tongue 11. The metal strap 8 is held secured in place diametrically upon the top Ycasing section 4 by means of a wire retaining ring or hoop 12 which engages over the end portions or flanges of the top strap 8 and seats in the peripheral groove of said top section. Engaged diametrically across the bottom 'ing section 15 is a retaining wire ring or casing section 1 is a bottom strap or band 13 one end of which is provided with a hinge sleeve 14 positioned between the hinge sleeves 9 and having the hinge pin 10 projecting therethrough to form the hinge mechanism. The bottom strap 13 is also held in place by means of a vwire ring or hoop 15 which engages over the end portions or flanges ot the lower strap 13 and seats in the peripheral groove ot the bottom Casing section 1. These simple parts form the completed cosmetic case oi' container having the casing sections 1 and l reinforced by the diametric metal straps 13 and 8, respectively, which are hingedlyconnected at the rear ot' the device and are held in place on the respective casingsections by the wire rings' or hoops. The latch tongue 11 `which i'orms a'nintegral part of the top strap 8 isadapted to 'snap or spring over the bottom wire ring 15 to hold the compact or casing sections latched in closed 'position as clearly illustrated in Figure 2.
YFigure 5 illustrates a modiiied torni orn cosmetic case or' container comprising upper and lower casein casing sections`16 each oi which is provided with a flat peripheral flange 17. The lower casing section 1G has mounted therein a lcosmetic compact 18 'held in placeby means of' apietaining ring or band 19. 'The :uppercasing section 16 contains a mirror 2O held in place by a retaining ringQl. Engaged diai'netrica'lly across the bottom casing section is a vmetal strap or band22 one end ot which is pivotally 'con- `nected to an upper strap or band 23 by means ot a'hinge 24. The vupper'strap 23 is engaged `diametri'cally vacross the` top casing section 16 and has a latch tongue 2 5 integrally formed von the front end thereof.
VEngaged over' the :end portions of the top strap'23 and encircling the straight fian'ge 17 ot the 'upper `casing section is a wire retaining iing or hoop r26 which is held in place Iby means yoit retaining tongues or lugs 27 struck troni the end portions of the top strap 28 to act as stops or retaining members 'for holding the ring 26 in place. Engaged over the ends of the lower diametric strap 22 and'around the flange of the bottom cas- Ahoop 28 which is also held in place by means Y'oi tongues or Vlugs 29 struck from the end portions 'of the lower strap 22. When the cosmetic. case is closed the latch tongue 25 `vis' adapted to'yspring Vover the lower wire ring 28 to hold the casing sections locked.
vThe two forms or" cosmetic casiiigs or containerslare of a si'mpliiiedconstruction permitting the device to 'be easily manufactured at a 'substantial reduction in cost over'earlier "compactholders. The devices are vadapted casings to be readily manufactured and assembled.
1 am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without l departing trom the principles ot this invention, and l therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted liereon, otherwise than necessitated by theprior art.
