It is one of the principal objects. o the invention to provide an easily controlled meehanism to lock a freely sliding` Windowin any adjusted. position.
It is, another objeet to provide a cheeking device cooperating with the movable window so as to prevent sudden movement-s thereof to closed position.

In order that the window will not rise too rapidly subject to the iniiuence of the spring 22, it is preferred that the checking device indicated generally at 36 be employed. It is preferred that the checking device be carried by the supporting plate i6 so that the whole window controlling mechanism may be mounted as a unit. To this end the plate carries a pivoted yoke $38, pivoted to the plate as at B9, to which there is welded or otherwise rigidly secured the tubular shaft 40. A piston in the form of a rod 42 is slidably mounted within the tubular member and extends to and is pivotally connected to the operating arm 18 adjacent the free end thereof as indicated at 43. The
\ outer surface of the rod 42 tits within the tubular member 40 with a certain degree of looseness so that there will be some leakage of air around the rod 42 when the rod slides in the tube 40. The closed end ot' the member 40 is provided with an opening 44 normally closed by means of a ball valve including the ball 4G and spring 4S. The spring operates between the ball and the stop carried by the member 40 so as to bold the valve normally closed.
The operation of this device is as follows: l/Vhen it is desired to lower the window it is lowered by means of the hand grip 36. This operation is not diflicult since a lowering movement of the window draws the rod 42 out of the cylindrical member 36, the ball 46 being displaced to permit the entrance of air through the opening 44. During this movement the latch 26 slides progressively over .1,the teeth 25 until the window is released.
The latch then engages an adjacent tooth of the arcuate rack 28 and the window is held in this position until manually released by means of the handle 32. I/Vhen the latch 26 is manually moved to unlatched position and the window is accordingly freed it will move upwardly under the influence of the spring 22. Since the window will be subject to the influence of the dashpot 36 its upward movement will be considerably restrained as the ball 46 will have closed the opening 44. The result is that the window may be stopped by the latch 26 or by reaching the upward limit of its movement Without tending to jar or break the window or any of the operating parts thereof.
While we have shown and described certain specific constructions it is to be understood that these are merely illustrative and that the invention is limited only as set forth in the appended claims.
IVe claim as our invention:
l. In combination with a supporting structure, a slidable window carried thereby, counterbalancing means tending to maintain said window in raised position, releasable stop mechanism for preventing said window from being raised, and means for limiting the speed of the upwardly moving window when said stop mechanism is released.
2. In combination with a supporting structure, a slidable window carried thereby, counterbalancing means tending to maintain said Window in raised position, releasable stop .mechanism tor maintaining said window in various adjusted positions, means for releasing said stop mechanism, and means for limiting the speed of movement of said window in one direction, said last mentioned means being krendered inoperative during the movement of said window in the opposite direction.
3. In a window controlling mechanism, a movable operating member operatively associated with said window, means tensioning said member for movement in one direction, manually controlled stop mechanism for maintaining said window in various adjusted positions and a dashpot operatively con` ncctcd to said mechanism to check movements ot the saine when moved by said tensioning means.

5. In a window regulator, a pivoted operating arm operatively connected to said window, spring means tending to rotate said operating arm in one' direction, stop mechanism to retain said arm in various adjusted positions, manual means for controlling said stop mechanism, and a speed checking device for maintaining substantially constant speed of movement of said operating arm when released from said stop mechanism.
6. In a window regulator, a rotatable operating member operativel f connected to said window, spring means tending to rotate said operating member in one direction, stop mechanism to retain said member in any adjusted position, manual means for controlling said stop mechanism and a fluid containing checking device operatively associated with said mechanism for preventing unrestricted movement of said member.
7. In a window controlling mechanism, a pivoted operating member operatively connected to said window, spring means for rotating said member in one direction, a checking device for preventing unrestricted movement of said member under the inllO tluence of said spring means, said checking device including a cooperating cylinder and piston operativ-d5v associated with said meehanism.

9.
