LOCKING DEVICE FOR DOORS OF RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed September 5,1906 fierial No. 333,319.
f0 It rah/omit nmy concern.-
Be it known that we, BERNHARD Gosrn- MEIER and WILHELM PAUELs, subjects of the German Emperor, and residents of Marxloh and I-Iolten, near Sterkrade, respectively, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Doors of Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for securely locking the doors of railway-cars; and its object is to prevent accidents occurring very often to persons by leaning-out of the windows of improperly-closed doors or by opening the doors too early, as well as to avoid robbery attaclrsfrom outside the train during the run of the latter.
The main advantage of the new device is that the same can only be operated from outside the train by a competent person, so that the doors cannot be opened from outi the doors are again closed, the rod a is turned so as to bring its projections f over the bolts 1 g, whereby the door is securely locked, the lever system c (1 being also securely locked in this position by its locking mechanism 1). 1 To allow of the door being closed also when the rod a is, with its projections f, already in locking position, the lower front corner of these projections, as well as the upper rear corner of the bolts g, are made round and j the bolt is placed under the spring influence, 1 so that when the door is thrown, with its bolt g, against the projection f the bolt moves j down, thereby compressing the spring i, and i jumps up again under the influence of this j spring as soon as it arrives in the eye of the projection, whereby the door is locked.
Having fully described our invention, l what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Locking device for doors of railway-cars side directly nor from inside while the train comprising in combination with the car, a
travels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the new device, showing the same as mounted on a railway-car, while Figs. 2 and 3 show an enlarged fragmentary side view and front view, respectively, of the device; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line A B of Fig. 3.
At each side of the railway-car and above the doors of the latter a rod or is movably mounted in brackets a. One end of this rod is provided with a rigid arm I), which in turn is pivotally connected with a lever system c d, which is centered at e on the face of the car and provided with a handle 0 and a locking device p of any known type. Above each door the rod is provided with an eye shaped projection f. Corresponding with with the locking mechanism which comes in catch with the eye-shaped projections and comprises a bolt g, a casing h, and a spring 'L, placed in this casing and destined to act on said bolt.
The operation of the device is as follows: The rod a is when the doors are to be opened turned so as to bring its eye-shaped projections f out of gear from the locking-bolt g. The doors can then freely be opened. hen
rod a movably mounted at each side above the doors of said car, brackets a adapted to hold said rod, an arm I) fixed to one end of j said rod, a lever system c, d pivotally connected to the free end of said arm and centered (at e) on the face of said car, a handle 0 attached to the free end of said lever system, a locking mechanism 19 for said lever system, an eye-shaped projection f disposed l on said rod above each door of said car and lprovided with a lower front corner made round, a casing h provided on top of each door of said car, a spring i placed in said cas- 1 ing, and a movable bolt g disposed on said casing and provided with an upper rear corner made round, and adapted to effect the locking of the door of said car by catching into said eye-shaped projection even when 1 said rod a is already in looking position, substantially as described and shown. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing j witnesses.
