HERMAN YOUNG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
KITCHEN-TUB COVER AND DRAINER.
Application filed March 23, 1927. Serial No. 177,707.
This invention relates to an improved kitchen tub cover and drainer and has for an object to provide an improved structure which may be used as a cover for a tub and a 5 support for articlesor may be used as a drainer for dishes or other articles.
Another object is to provide an improved cover structure wherein part will act as a closure and part will act as an article sup- !0 port and drainer.
A further object, more specifically, is to provide a cover structure for kitchen tubs whereinan upper lid is used as a closure and a lower depressed foraminous member is uscdas a draining structure.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a pair of kitchen tubs and a combined cover and drainer, embodying the invention. Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view through Figure l on line 2-2.
Figure 3 is a sectional view similar to Figure 2, except a slightly modified structure is disclosed.
:15 Referring to the. accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the tubs and 2 the combined cover and drainer. Two covers and drainers are shown in the drawing, but as they are identical in structure, the description of one will apply to both. 'Each of the combined covers and drainers is provided wit-h a frame S, which is preferably hollow as shown in Figure 2. The device may be made of any desired material but preferably of sheet metal. 7 hen the device is being manufactured, the sheet metal is formed into the hollow frame 3 and a portion depressed to form the drainer bottom 4 and the inclined side walls 5. The bottom 4 is preferably formed with a large number of small holes to permit water or other liquid to readily drain therethrough. In forming the walls 5, an offset or annular depression 6, 15 provided for receiving the edge portlonf the closure or lid 7. The lid 7 is hingedly connected to frame 3 by hinges 8, the hinge structure being of any desirable kind. The frame 3 at the rear is hingedly connected to the back board 9 by suitable hinges 10. By reason of this st-ructure,.the frame 3 with lid 7, may be raised and swung back out of the way when it is desired to use the tub.
In using the device for draining knives, dishes or other articles, the lid 7 is raised as shown at the left of Figure 1. When the as drainer is not desired, the lid is closed as shown at the right in Figure 1. By reason of the depression 6, the lid 7 lies flush with the top of frame 3 and thereby presents a neat level surface. so
In Figure 3, a slightly modified form of the invention is presented. In this form of the invention, the structure is identical with the preferred form except the bottom at has been removed and an annular flange or (35 shoulder 11 provided. On this shoulder is removably positioned a wire mesh screen 12.
This screen is preferably formed with a stiffening sheet metal edge 12 so that the mesh will remain reasonably taut and the en- 79 tire structure sufficiently strong to support dishes and other articles of reasonable weight while they are draining.
What I claimis:
A drainer for kitchen tubs, comprising single integral sheet metal structure having a hollow frame substantially rectangular in cross section, a horizontal flange extending inwardly from substantially the center of said frame whereby a depressed shoulder surrounding said frame is presented, an inclined inwardly tapering wall extending from said flange, and a flat fora'minous bottom extending from the bottom of said tapering wall, and a hingedly mounted lid 85 positioned to fit into said shoulder when in functioning position for covering said foraminous bottom.
HERMAN YOUNG.
