MEANS FOR PORTIONING CIGABETTES OR OTHER STAFF-SHAPED ARTICLES FOR THE PACKING OF THE SAME.
Application filed August 29, 1925, Serial No. 53,420, and 'in Sweden June 9, 1923.
This invention relates to a device for 9, adapted to enter the respective guide-ways. portioning cigarettes or other stafishaped ar- 7 Piston 8 is movable in guides and is pushed ticles for the packing of the same in boxes into the guide-ways by aspi-ing 10 and reor the like. According to the invention the moved from the same by a cam-disc 12,.pro-
cigarettes are fed from one or more magavided on a rotating shaft 11, and a motion zines through two or more channels or guidetranemitting device 13, 14. 7 ways to an assembling place, which is com- 'In order to prevent the cigarettes from 60 inon to the said guide-ways and at which the sliding downwards in the guide ways 2, 3 guide-ways are substantially horizontal and and 4 and occupying an oblique position,
located above each other, so that the cigawhile the piston 8, after it has removed the rettes are arranged into two or more parallel cigarettes from the horizontal parts of the rows, located above each other. A suitable guide-ways, is returned, three bars 15, 16 65 number of cigarettes in each row, which and 17 are provided, Fig. 3, which during cigarettes together constitute a set of cigathe return stroke of the piston are forced rettes to be packed in a box. is then pushed against that cigarette of each row, which is from the said guide-ways by a piston and located nearest to those cigarettes which are preferably into a chamber, in which the said puslied trom the guide-ways, and thus lock set is compressed to a compact bundle bethe said cigarette and all subsequent cigafore the set is introduced into the boX. l/Vith iettcs in the guide-ways. The said bars are the portioning device means may be com carried by pivotally mounted bell-crank bined for supplying one or more coupons, levers 18, 19 and 20 respectively. Fig. 2 is swung by the lever 19 by means of toothed shows in a sideview a piston for pushing the segments 24 and 25. As} the set of cigarettes set of cigarettes out from the guide-ways. is pushed from the guide-ways bythe piston Fig. 3 shows in a side view means for lock-, 8, the cigarettes may enter 1 a chamber, iii

As the compression a side view means for feeding coupons or chamber, which may be of any suitable or the 1ikeinto th sets f cigarettes. known construction, is not comprised bythis In the. portioning device shown in the invention, itis not shown in the drawing. drawing three channels or guide-ways 2, 8 Owingto the. fact that the cigarettes are and i extend downwards from a magazine 1 ought together "ito a set from two or containing cigarettes, into which guide-ways more guide-ways simultaneously the gatherthe cigarettes are fed in the known manner mg oi the sets, each composed by a plurality 49 by rotating drums 5, 6 and 7 respectively of rows, is effected very rapidly, which conprovided in their eripheral surfaces with sl'derably increases the output of the pack grooves. The said guide-ways 2, 3 andi meet ing machine. I at their lower ends in such manner, that their For supplying each set of cigarettes with lower parts, which are substantially horioneor more coupons or the like a slot 26,
zontal, are located above each other and the ig. 1, is provided in one of the walls of the cigarettes descending through the guideguide-ways, into which the coupon is pushed 7 ways constitute in the said horizontal parts and thus, in the present case, will be located of the guide-ways three rows of cigarettes between two rows of cigarettes. The said located above each other as shown in Figs, 1 coupon is pushed from the said slot simul- 50 and 8. A suitable number of cigarettes in taneously with the set 01" cigarettes by a each row is then pushed longitudinally of the tongue 9 )rovided on the piston 8. Coupons igar ttes out from th guide-way b a pisare provided in a magazine 27 and are fed ton 8, Fig. 2, which is provided with tongues from the same by a catcher 28, pivotaliy mounted on a slide 30 which is reciprocated in a guide 29. The said catcher 28 is "held by a spring 31 in an adjusted position, determined by screw 32, and so adapted that the catcher during the reciprocation, of the slide 30, will engage the lowermost coupon (or it may be two or more coupons) in the magazine 27. While the slide-is moved toward the right the caught coupon slides on the top side of the guide of the slide 30. As the slide 30 has been moved through a distance substantially equal to the length of a coupon, it is returned, the coupon being engaged and held in its position by a pawl, fixed onthe guide of the slide and consisting of a plate-spring 33 having a knee. The other end of the saidspring 33 is adapted toforce-the coupon against its guide. As the-slide 30is again moved toward the right a second catcher, 3'1 provided on the slide engages the coupon held by the pawl 33 and moves the same a further step toward the right, until'it is engaged by a second pawl 35. By meansof some additional catchers and. corresponding pawls coupon after coupon is inthe described manner fed into the slot 26 and associated with the respective sets of cigarettes. The slide 30 may be reciprocatedjin any suitable manner for in stance bymeans of a cam or groove-disc and a motion transmitting device (not shown).
Among the advantages of the described portioning device, the following may be mentioned. In contradistinction to portioning devices of that type in which the guide-ways also atthe assembling place are vertical and for thatv reason require counter-pistons which are-moved upwards and downwards andsupportthe, cigarettes While lowered to the assembling place, the construction of the present portioning device is more simple, because no such coun-ter-pistons are necessary. For, that reason the present portioning device operates in a more reliable manner. Furtherit may be mentioned, that, while the set of cigarettes is transmitted into the compression chamber mentioned above, the set of cigarettes can not collapse. The locking means shown in the drawing for retaining the cigarettesin the guide-ways is very simple and not able to spoil the cigarettes. The assembled set of cigarettes may easily be inspected and the. supplying of the same with coupons is easilyv effected.
Instead of the drums feeding the cigarettes from the magazine any other feed device,
evidently, may be used, for instance endless belts or the like provided with pockets. The coupons etc. may be cut from a strip. The part of the strip constituting the coupon etc. may be cut from the strip either before the strip, fed forward in any suitable manner, arrives to the set of cigarettes, the part cut from the strip being then introduced into the slot 26, or after the end of the strip has been introduced into the said slot. The coupon etc. may be placed above or under the set of cigarettes or at one of its, sides instead of inside the set as shown. The invention may evidently be modified in many other ways without exceeding the limits of the same.
We claim:
1. In a device for portioning staff-shaped articles for the packing of same the combination of guide-ways tor the said articles which at an assembling place extend in a substantially horizontal direction and are lo-' cated above each other, so that the articles are gatheredin'parallel superposed rows, a piston for pushing a set of articles out from the said assembling place, members provided at the assembling place and means for forcing the saidmembers against those articles, which are located nearest-to the set of articles in each guide-way in order-to retain the articles in the guide-ways duringthe return stroke of the piston.
2. In a device for portioning staff-shaped articles for the packing of same and for incorporating a coupon, photo or the like to each set of articles the combination of guideways for the said articles which at an assembling place extend in a substantially horizontal direction and are located above each other, sothat the articles are gathered in parallel superposed rows, a slide reciprocated at a magazine containing the coupons and provided with yielding members located behind each other and adapted to catch a coupon in the magazine and to transport the same onto the gathered set of articles, stationary members adapted to engage the coupon and hold the same in its new position, while the slide returns, and a piston for pushing a set of articles together with the coupon out from the said assembling place.
In testimony whereof we have ailixed our signatures.
