Be it known that I, FRANK WILLIAM Lnv, a citizen of Austria, and a resident of the borough of Queens, city of New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Packaging Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines in which articles are placed in a magazine and several of said articles separated therefrom.
are compressed 'into a compact bunch, and, together with a wrapper are forced through the machine, said machine having wrapper folding alndpaste applying means, whereby the wrapper is folded and secured upon the articles, thereby forming a package.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby part of the operation of folding of the wrapper can be performed by one set of mechanism which is distinct from a set of mechanism performing the operation of folding of another part, whereby the machine can by suitable adjusting means, be changed from one working automatically into one which can be manually operated.
One set-of mechanism actuates a plunger, the movement of said plunger serving to actuate mechanism for separating articles from the magazine and compressing them into a compact bunch, said plunger then forcing said articles and a wrapper through a wrapper folding channel. This set of mechanism also actuates a paste applying mechanism during travel of said articles and wrapper through said wrapper foldin'gchannel. This set of mechanism also actuates" a plunger the movement of which is in time with the first. named plunger.
The other set of mechanism actuates another plunger the movement of which actuates movable folders of the wrapper, said plunger also actuatingmovable Walls thereby permitting said plunger to force said articles and wrapper through another wrapper folding channel. This set of mechanism also actuates another paste applying mechanism during travel 'of said articles and wrapper through the last named wrapper folding channel. This set of mechanism also actuates a shaker having reciprocating movements in said magazine;
Means are provided whereby these two sets of mechanism are actuated automatically, and adjustable means provided for zine, showing partitions for separating articles therefrom.

-Projecting upward from the frame 1 of the machine is a stud 2 upon which is'jourvn'aled a gear segment 3 having oscillating movement. Gear segment 3 is in mesh with a pinion 4 which is journaled upon a stud 5. Secured to pinion 4 is a gear wheel 6 which is in mesh with a rack 7 formed on a plunger 8. Oscillating movements of gear of mechanism adjusted for operation by a 8 occupies the position shown in Figs. 1
and upward movement of one end of a lever 11 carrying a roller 12, will. be permitted. Lever 11 is pivoted at 13,'and the other end thereof is connected at 14- to one end of a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16. The other end of lever 15 is provided with a roller 17 which bears uponthe upper end of a rod 18 having vertical movement in a guide 19. The lower end of rod 18 is provided with an arm 20 which bears upona slide 21 having verticalmovement in guides 22. Two links 23 which are inclined in opposite directions are pivoted at 24 upon the slide 21. Links 23 are also pivoted at 25 to the free ends of 'arms'26 which are journaled upon the fixed pivots 27. Also connected to the pivots 25' are slides 28 which have movements in guides 29. Form- .ing part of slides 28 are vertical walls 30 and horizontal plates 31 which partially support articles placed in the magazine 32. 'By means of springs 33 acting against the two arms 26 the pivots 25 are moved away from. the pivot 24 to "which the links 23 are connected, thereby causing upward movement of slide 21, and rod 18, resulting in' movement of levers 15 and 11 and consequent travel of roller 12 into said cutaway portion 10 of the plunger 8. 'In the space between the vertical walls 30, are arranged partition plates 34. Secured 'to the ends of each one of the partition plates 34 are angularly shaped plates 35, which are provided with ends 36 interlocking with similar ends 36 of plates 35 secured to two adjacent partition plates 34, or to wall 30. A limited amount of play of an end 36 of one plate 35 is permitted'between the end 36 of another plate 35 and that part of the last named plate.35 which is secured to the partition plate 34. Accordingly when the walls 30 are separated "to the distance shown in Fig. 6, the interlocking ends 36 of the plate 35 which is secured to each wall 30 will have taken against the interlocking ends 36 of theplate 35 which is secured to an adjacent 3 partition plate 34, and the other interlockin ends 36' of the'latter plate 35 will have ta en against the interlocking ends 36 of the plate 35 which is vsecured to another adjacent partition plate-34, and'so on until all of the partition plates 34 will have reached the limit of their travel, causing them to be separated equal distances apart as shown in Fig. 6. When the partition plates 34 are separated as shown in Fig. 6, the articles 37 readily enter the-space between said partitions and come torest upon the floor 38,

Forward movement of plunger 8 forces the articles 37 through a channel 44, thereby causing said articles to force said wrapper between an upper plate 45, a lower plate 46 and two.side folders 47 whereby said wrapper is folded upon the article in the manner shown in Fig. 12. Further forward movement of the plunger 8, causes upper side flap 48 of the wrapper to be turned down by means of folders, 49, projecting downward from said upper plate 45. These folders 49 consists of plates which extend vertically downward and are so placed that all of their inner surfaces are in line with the inner ends of the side folders 47. The wrapper folding operation is performed by means of the lower edges of the. vertical plates, which edges have a downward inclination of 20 from the upper plate 45. It will be seen that as these folders act only in line with the sides of the bunch of cigarettes, they serve to hold the cigarettes in place, and also to make a sharp fold of-the wrapper. wrapper are forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, thereby causing said wrapper to be partially folded upon said articles; a second wrapper folding channel in range with said receiving chamber, and a second plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber and second wrapper folding channel; certain walls of said receiving chamber having reciprocating movements across the path of said second plunger; wrapper folders having reciprocating movements across the path-v of the first named plunger, sa1d movable walls and said wrapper folders being actuated by said second plunger; means for actuating said second plunger, whereby said wrapper folders are actuated, thereby causin the wrapper to be further folded upon sai partially wrapped articles, further forward movement of: said second plunger then causing said movable walls to be actuated, thereby causing said walls to be moved away from the path of said second plunger, whereby said second plunger causes said-partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be completely folded upon said articles.
6. A packaging machine comprising a receiving chamber and a wrapper folding channel, a reciprocating plunger, a support for a wrapperbetween said wrapper folding channel and said plunger, and supports for articles between said plunger and said support for a wrapperymeans for actuating said plunger, whereby said articles and wrapper are forced through said Wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, thereby causing said Wrapper to be partially folded upon said articles; a second wrapper folding channel in range with said receiving chamber, and a' second plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber and second wrapper folding channel, certain walls of said receiving chamber having reciprocating movements across the path of said second plunger wrapper folders having reciprocatmg movements across the path of the first named plunger, said wrapper folders being actuated by said second plunger, means for actuating said second plunger, whereby said wrapper folders areactuated, thereby causing the wrapper to be further folded upon said partially wrapped articles, fu'rtherforward movement of said second plunger then causing said partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second Wrapper folding channel thereby causing said wrapper to be completely folded upon said articles.
7. A packaging machine comprising a magazine for articles, said magazine having partitions formingpockets for receiving several of said articles, said magazine having a reciprocating shaker forcausing said articles to come 'to rest between, said partitionsja Wrapper folding channel and areceiving chamber-on, one side of said magazine, and a reciprocating plunger on the opposite side, a support for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and said magazine means for actuating said plunger, whereby said articles and wrapper are forced through said Wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, thereby causing said wrapper to be partially folded upon said articles; a, second wrapper fold ing channel in range with the firstnamed-rceiving chamber, and a second plunger having reciprocating movements through the first named receiving chamber and said second wrapper folding channel,- wrapper folders,v having reciprocating movements across thepath of the first named plunger, said Wrapper folders being actuated by said second plunger, meansfor actuating said second plunger, whereby said wrapper folders are; actuated, thereby causing the wrap per to be further folded upon said partially wrapped articles, further forward movement of said second 'plunger'then causing said partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second wrapper fold-ing chan nel, thereby causing said wrapper to be com-v pletely folded upon said articles; and mechanism connecting said means for actuating said second plunger to'said shaker, whereby said reciprocating movements thereof are effected.
8. A packaging machine comprising a magazine for articles, said magazine having partitions forming pockets for receiving several of said articles, said magazine having a reciprocating shakerari'anged'to cause said articlesto come to rest n the pockets formed by said partitions; a wrapper fold: ing channel, a paste applying mechanism and a receiving chamber on one side of Said magazine, a reciprocating plunger on the opposite side, a support for a Wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and said magazine; a second wrapper folding channel, a second paste applying mechanism,and a receiving chamber in range with the first named receiving chamber, and a second plunger having reciprocating movements through the first named receiving chamber and stud, second wrapper folding channel;
movable wrapper folders which are actuated by 'said secondv plunger; a receiving channel in range with said second receiving chamber, and a third plungerhaving reciprocating movements through said second receiving chamber; means for actuating the first named plunger whereby said articles and wrapper are forced through the first named wrapper folding channel and into the first named receiving chamber thereby causing said wrapper to be partially folded'upon said articles, means whereby said meansforactuating the first named plunger also actuates the first named-paste applying mechanism;'l means for, actuating said second plunger,
whereby said wrapper folders are actuated thereby causing the wrapper to be further folded upon said partially wrapped articles,
further forward movement of said second plunger then causing said partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second wrapper folding channel and into said second receiving chamber, thereby causing the wrapper to be completely folded upon said articles; means whereby said means for actuating said second plunger also actuates said second paste applying mechanism, and
said shaker of said magazine; and mechanism connecting said means for actuating the first named plunger vto said third plunger, whereby said third plunger is actuated,
thereby causing said wrapped articles to'be forced from said second receiving chamber into said receiving channel.
9. A packaging machine comprising a magazine for articles,- said magazine having movable partitions, means for actuating said movable partitions whereby they are separated suificient distances apart to permit entry of several of said articles, awra-ppen' folding channel, a paste applying mechanism and a receiving chamber on one side of said magazine, areciprocatingplunger on the opposite side, a support for awrapper between said wrapper folding channeland said-magazine, means actuating said plunger, said means foractuating said movable partitions being actuated by said plunger, whereby forward movement of the plunger causes the partitions to be brought closer together, thereby causing said several articles to be forced into a compact bunch,"f'urther forward movement of said plunger then causing said articles and wrapper to be forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby the wrapper is partially folded upon said articles, means whereby said means foractuating said plunger also actuates said paste applying mechanism; a second wrapper folding channel in range with said receiving chamber,
said plunger plyingmechanism; further forward moveplunger then causing said are ing channels, wrapper ciprocating movements across the path of and a second plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber and said second wrapper folding channel wrapper folders having reciprocating movements across the path of the first named plunger, said'wrapper folders being actuated by said second plunger; means for. actuating said second plunger, whereby said wrapper folders are actuated, thereby 'causing the wrapper to be further folded upon sa d articles, further forward movement of said second" plunger then causing said partially ..wrappe d articles to be forced into said secondwrapper folding channel, thereby causingsaid wrapper to be further folded upon said articles; a second'paste applying mechanism in range with parts of said wrapper duringt'ravel thereof through said second wrapper folding channel; and-means whereby said means for actuating said sec ond plunger also actuates'said second paste applying mechanism.

A packaging machine comprising a receiving chamber and a wrapperfolding' channel, a reciprocating plunger, a support for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and said plunger, and supports for articlesybetween saidplunger and said support for a wrapper, means for actuating said plunger, whereby said articles and wrapper are forced into said wrapper folding-channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be partially folded upon said articles; a paste applying mechanism range with parts of said wrapper during travel thereof through-said wrapper folding channel, meanswhereby said means for actuating also .actuates said paste ap ment of said ticles and paste coated parts of the wrapper to be forcedthrough said] wrapper folding channel, and into said receiving chamber, thereby. causing said paste coated parts of 'the wrapper to be folded upon the wrapper containing said articles, a second wrapper folding channel in range with said receiving chamber, and a second plunger having reciprocating ceivingchamber and second wrapper foldfolders having removements through said resaid second wrapper folding channel; and means whereby said means for actuating said second plunger also actuates said. second paste applying mechanism.

A packaging machine comprising a receiving chamber and a wrapper folding channel, a reciprocating plunger, a support for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and said plunger, and supports for articles between said plunger and said support for a wrapper, means for actuating said plunger, whereby said articles and wrapper are forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, thereby causing" said wrapper to be partially folded upon said articles; a second wrapper folding channel and receiving chambr; .n range with the first named receiving chamber, and a second plunger having reciprocating movements through the first named receiving chamber and said second wrapper folding channel; wrapper folders having reciprocating movements across the path of the first named plunger, said wrapper folders being actuated by said second plunger; means for actuating said second plunger, whereby said wrapper folders are actuated, thereby causing the wrapper to be further folded upon said partially wrapped articles, further forward movement of said second plunger then causing said partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second wrapper folding channel and into said second receiving chamber, thereby causing said wrapper to be completely folded upon said articles; a receiving channel in range with said second receiving chamber, a third plunger, having reciprocating movements through said second receiving chamber; and mechanism connecting said third plunger to said means for actuating the first named plunger, whereby said third plunger is actuated, thereby causing said wrapped articles to be forced from said second receiving chamber into said receiving channel. p

A packaging machine COIIIPI'lSlIlg a magazine for articles, a wrapper folding channel and a receiving chamber on one side of said magazine, and a reciprocating plun: ger on the opposite side, a support for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and said magazine, means for actuating said plunger whereby forward movement thereof causes said articles and wrapper to be forced through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby the wrapper is partially folded upon said articles; a second plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber; wrapper folders having reciprocating movements across the path of the first named plunger; said receiving chamber provided with side walls having reciprocating movements across the path of the second plunger; said wrapper folders and said side walls of the receiving chamber being actuated by said second plunger; means for. actuating said second plunger, whereby said side walls are moved out of range with said second plunger, and whereby said wrapper folders are actuated, thereby causin upon sai articles, further forward movement of said second plunger then causing said. articles and wrapper to be moved out of said receiving chamber.

A packaging machine, comprising a wrapper folding channel and a receiving chamber; means whereby a series of articles'and a wrapper can be moved throu h said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby the wrapper is partially folded upon said articles; a plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber; wrapper folders havin reciprocating movements into and out '0 said wrapper folding channel; said receiving chamber provided with side walls havmg reciprocating movements across the the wrapper to be further folded path of said plunger, said wrapper folders and said sidewalls of the receiving chamber being actuated by said plunger; means for actuating said plunger whereby said side walls are moved out of range with the lunger, and whereby said wrapper folders are actuated thereby causing the wrapper to be further folded upon said articles, further forward movement of said second plunger then causing said articles and wrapper to be moved out of said receiving chamber.

A packaging machine comprising a wrapper folding channel and a receiving chamber; means whereby a series of articles and a wrapper can be moved through said wrapper folding channel and into said receiving chamber, whereby the wrapper is partially folded upon said articles; a second wrapper folding channel in range with said receiving chamber; a plunger having reciprocating movements through said receiving chamber and said second wrapper folding channel; said receiving chamber provided with side walls having reciprocating movements across the path of said plunger, said side walls being actuated by said plunger; means for actuating said plunger, whereby said side walls are moved out of range with said plunger, further forward movement of said plunger then causing said partially wrapped articles to be forced through said second wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper tobe completely folded upon'said articles. 1
