My present invention has to do with chairs of commode type; and it contemplates the provision of a nursery or commode chair, designed more particularly to be carried on automobile tours for the use of small children, the chair being adapted when not in use to be reduced to small compass and to be carried with quite as much facility as an ordinary small suit case, and susceptible of being readily packed in a space of small compass in or on an automobile.

To the attainn'lent of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

3o imong other elements my novel chair comprises a comparatively thick board 1 having a hole 2. Hingedly connected at 3 to the board 1 is a back 4 having side flanges 5the ends of which remote'from the hinge 8 are beveled as designated by 6. The board 1 also serves for the connection of side boards 7,the said side boards 7 being hinged at 8 to the board 1 and being arranged between the flanges 5 of the back i, and being provided with apertures 9 for the passage 0% a strap. as hereinafter set forth. Manifestly when it is desired to fold the chair and reduce the same to the general apps, rance of a small suit case, as shown in Figure 3, the

5 side boards 7 may be folded inward upon the board 1, and the back it may also be folded inwardly so that its flanges 5 rest at opposite sides of the board 1.

For the support of the board -1 and its 5 appurtenances in proper spaced position above the ground, I provide pairs of legs 10,

, the said legs being preferably of angle iron, as appears in Figure 2, so as to enable the legs of one air to fold over the legs of the other pair. ach pair of legs 10 is hingedly connected at 11 to pendent portions 12 on the board 1, and it will also be noted that the legs 10 of each pair are joined by a bar 13, and that braces 141 are interposed between and connected to the legs of each pair and the bar 13 complementary to said pair. The legs are capable of being folded as shown in Figure 2, it follows that when desired the board 1 and its appurtenances may be superimposed upon an ordinary water'closet seat so as to afford a )roper seat for a small child, and this while adequately protecting the child from a sanitary standpoint.

Hingedly connected at 15 to the pendentportion of the board 1 is a closure section 16, and hingedly connected at 17 to said closure section 16 is a supplemental closure section 18 on which is a mitered portion 19, equipped with ahandle 20, Figures 1 and 3, and designed when the chair is completely closed to be opposed to the beveled ends of the flanges 5 on the back 4, after themannei shown in Figure 3.

Manifestly when my novel chair is set up ready for use, as illustrated in Figure '1, a strap, not shown, may be secured in the. openings 9 of the side boards 7 for the retention of a child on the seat board 1 and betweenthe side boards 7. This, however, is not of the essence of my invention, and therefore, the openings 9 may be altogether omitted without materially affecting my invention. V I

A illustrated in Figure 1 and as also illustrated in Figure 3, the mitered closure portion 19 is provided with a fastener member 21, the said fastener member 21' being designed to cooperate with a complementary fastener-member 22 on one of the flanges 5. The said fastener members 21 and 22 may 95 be and preferably are of the types ordinarily used in suit case construction and need not, therefore, be described in detail, it being obviously within the purview of my invention to employ fastener members of any appropriate description for the detachable connection of the miter closure portion 19 to one or both of the flanges 5 when the parts are relatively arranged as shown in Figure 3.

With the parts arranged as shown in Figure 3, and the handle 20 located at the top of the device, the device obviously may be handled withthe same'facility as an ordinary suitcase, and may be carried in a space of small compass in or on an automobile or the like. 7

It. will further be understood from the foregoing that when the chair is folded and it is desired to put the same into use, it is simply necessary for the operator to detach the miter closure portion 19 from the flange 5, and then unfold the legs and the back at and the side boards 7 following the arrange ment of the closure sections 16, 17, 18 and 19 in the idle positions illustrated at the left of Figure 1.

In addition to the practical advantages hereinbefore ascribed to my novel chair, it will be appreciated that the chair is simple and inexpensive in construction and is well adapted to withstand the usage to which devices of analogous character are ordinarily subjected.

I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in. the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an understanding of the said embodiment in all of its details. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the structure as shown and described, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention.

Having described my invention, what i claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. A chair comprising an apertured board, a back hingedly connected to said board at one end thereof and at the upper" surface thereof and having spaced flanges, side board hingedly connected to the first named board one at each side thereof and at the upper surface thereof and swingable between the flanges of the back when said back extended upwardly from the firstnamed board, said flanges on the back being provided with beveled ends, the first-named board being equipped with legs foldable on its under surface and also being equipped with hingedly connected closure sections one of which is hingedly connected with the first-named board at its under surface at said one end thereof and the other of which is equipped with a miter portion adapted to be opposed to the beveled ends of the flanges and detachably connected thereto when the back is folded down over the upper surface of the first-named board and the closure sections are disposed over the under surface of said first-named board to hold the side boards and the legs folded over the upper and bottom surfaces respectively of the first-named board.

A foldable chair comprising a board, a flanged back hingedly connected to the board at the upper surface thereof and at one end thereof, side boardshingedly connected to the :irstnamed board, one at each side thereof at the upper surface thereof and swingable between the flanges of the back, foldable supporting means on the under surface of the first-named board, and closure means hingedly connected with the first-named board at said one end thereof and at the lower surface thereof and adapted to enclose the foldable supporting means and to be detachably connected with the flanges of the back when said back is folded down over the board tohold the side boards folded down thereover.

3. A foldable chair comprising a board, a flanged back hingedly connected with the board at the upper surface thereof and at one end thereof, sine boards hingedly connected with the first-named board and swingable beuveen the flanges of the back and over the upper surfaces ofthe firstnamed board, foldable supporting means connected with the under surface of the first-named board, and closure means also hingedly connected with the first-named board at the under surface thereof and-at said one end thereof adapted to enclosethe foldable supporting means and be detachably connected with the flanges of the'back when the back is folded down over the side boards and the first named boards, the flanges of the back being provided with beveled ends, and the closure means being provided with a mite-r portion adapted to be opposed to said beveled ends, the'said nnter portion being equipped with a handle.
