Description

June 2, 1942. E. c. SIMMONS 1 v 2,284,993
GRAVE PROTECTOR Filed Au 8, 1941 I Sheets-Sheet 1 E .61'5M1mams,
June 2, 1942. E. c. SIMMONS GRAVE PROTEC'TOR Filed Aug. 8, 1941 ZSheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 2, 1942 UNITED TES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in grave protectors, and its general object is to provide a device of this character which is attractive in appearance, of light weight, and which can be manufactured economically.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which will serve efficiently as a protector for the grave under all weather conditions, which is simple, practical, strong and durable, and which is adapted to be expeditiously employed in use.
With these and other objects in view, as will hereinafter more fully appear, and which will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference is now made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure l is a side elevation view, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of same;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View, taken on the line i4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken on the line 55 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a side elevational view, partly broken away, of a modification;
Figure I isan end elevation of the modified form;
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 6;
Figure 9 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 99 of Figure 7;
Figure 10 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line Ill-l0 of Figure 6; and
Figure 11 is a perspective view of the modified form shown in Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, showing the protector in folded position.
Referring now to the drawings in which similar reference characters represent similarparts, in
Figures 1 to 5 inclusive the preferred embodiment comprises an arched metallic cover designated at It, provided with integral side walls I2, and front and rear end sections l4 and i6 respectively. These end sections l4 and I6 may be formed integrally with the side walls l2 and cover It! or may be welded or otherwise suitably afiixed thereto. The side Walls l2 and ends l4 and 16 are provided with a rectangular outwardly extending right-angle flange I8, adapted to lie flat on the ground surrounding the grave, where the cover may be firmly held in place by means of conventional pegs or spikes 20, driven into the ground through openings l8 in the flange I8.
The front end I4 of the cover Ii! may be provided with a suitable frame 22, one end of which, 24
is hinged at 26, to provide a name-plate holder as will be obvious by referring to Figures 3 and 5 of the drawings. A glass or other transparent rectangular member 28 may be utilized to form a covering for the name-plate, which may be inserted back of the member 28 into the frame 22. End 24 may be then closed and locked, if desired, by means of a conventional look, not shown.
It will be understood that in manufacturing my improved protector, any desired material may, of course, be used, but light weight thin metal, such as tin, bronze, aluminum, etc., are preferable, since a protector of the character described made from such material is light in weight and may, therefore, be easily transported, and utilized, and at the same time is also strong, durable, attractive and economical.
Referring now to the modification shown in Figures 6 to 11, inclusive, my protector comprises a cover "l of canvas, duck or other similarand preferably waterproofed material, bolted, riveted, or otherwise suitably affixed to front end sections W and M rear end sections I6 and 16, and flange members W by means of rivets or bolts 19'. End sections M and I I are hingedly connected by conventional hinge means 2lb. End section M may be provided with a suitable name plate holder 22-12, as described in connection with the preferred embodiment. It will be understood that flange member I8 is, in this modified form, constructed in two side and two end sections, to permit folding of the protector, and is preferably made from any suitable light weight metal, such as heretofore mentioned, as are the end sections M M [8 and I6, and that the flange sections are provided with suitable openings or holes lfl whereby the cover may be firmly affixed to the ground by means of conventional pegs or spikes 20 as described in connection with the preferred embodiment.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a new and useful improvement in grave protectors and have provided a protector which is neat and attractive, light in weight, yet strong and durable and which will protect the grave under any and all weather conditions. Furthermore, the protector is economical to manufacture and may be readily and expeditiously set up for use and dismantled for transportation by unskilled labor.
It is believed, therefore, that by the use of my protector much time and labor will be saved and yet a conservative, durable, neat and attractive cover will be provided.
While I have illustrated and described the invention in some detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to such details, but only by the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a grave protector, a flexible cover, rigid upstanding end walls having end edges of the cover secured thereto and each including foldable sections, and rigid non-connected members secured to side edges of the cover and to the
