UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN BALE-TIES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 163,815, dated May 25,1875; application filed May 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a Bale- Tie, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a tie or clasp for securing together the ends of the metallic band or strap which is usually employed to secure the contents of cotton and other bales, which shall be simple, cheap, effective, and easily applied.
My invention consists of a bale-hoop or band of iron, having slots or notches formed in both ends of it, with which is combined a clip, clasp, or catch inserted in the said slots or notches, and bent down around their edges, so that it cannot come out, thus eft'ectually lockingthe two parts or ends of the bale or band together.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a bale-tie embodying1 my invention, Fignre l is a side view of the two ends of a baleband secured together by my tie. Fig. 2 is 'a cross-section of the same on the line m Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an edge view in detail of the clip or clasp used in Fig. 1, Where the slots are employed. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of a band se# cured by a clip or clasp inserted in notches in the band. Fig. 5 is an edge view in detail of the clip or clasp used in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a modification of Fig. l. Fig. 7 is a crosssection on y y, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a modification of Fig. 7 Fig. 9 is an edge view, in detail, of the clip or clasp used in Fig. 6.
A and B are the ends of the band. a a and b b are slots made in the band to receive the clip or clasp O. c c are notches made in the band for the same purpose. These notches may be used in combination or conjunction with the slots; or the slots may be used without the notches, or the notches may be used alone. I prefer, however, to use the slots either with or without the notches. Figs. 2 and 7 show the construction Where the slots are used alone, Fig. 4 Where the notches are used alone, and Fig. 8 Where both the slot and notches are employed. One end of the baleband may be fitted with but one place to receive the clip or clasp, and the other with several to adapt the bale-bandv to bales of various sizes 5 or both ends may be prepared to receive the clip or clasp at a number of points, as preferred.
The clip or clasp may be made from the waste or scrap made in cutting the bale-bands from bundles of hoop-iron, so that the cost for material is merely nominal, while the amount cut from the band to receive the clip is so small that the band is not materially weakened thereby.
This tie is easily and cheaply made, readily applied, and, when the bale is re-pressed for shipment abroad, the old bands may be cut oft' and reapplied to the bale after re-pressing without any additional expense.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- The bale band having notches or slots formed in it, as described, in combination with the clip or clasp, applied as set forth, to form a bale-tie, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. NOTTINGHAM SMITH.
