GATE HINGE.
Application filed August 21, 19588.
vand readily done with the usual gate hinges new on the market. Another object is to provide hinge means fastenable on a gate .post or the like, and having pivotingineans thereon to coeoperate with companion pivotF ing means attached to a gate, and also having retaining means,r preferably in the form of an eye 4on the means attached to the gate post,to embrace one of said pivoting means and positively hold the two hinge means or hinge parts properly Yconnected and prevent separation thereof. A further object is to provide adjustable hinge means fastenabl-e on various sized gate posts, and which means has pivoting means thereon to engage co-operating pivoting means on a gate hinge part, and also has means to embrace one of the pivoting means and prevent removal of the gate and its attached means from the post and the connected hinge means.
Other objects and advantageous ends are attained with my invention, as will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing my improved hinge means in position for swingably supporting and positively retaining a gate on a gate post; v
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of my hinge;
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively end and horizontal views taken on section lines 3-3 and 4 4 of F ig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a side view of a slightly modified form of post embracing hinge means.
The invention chiefly comprises hinge means for engaging the gate post, and other hinge means pivotally connected therewith and att-achable to the gate, and means for holding these two pivotal means positively connected. The means on the gate post is preferably arranged as illustrated in the drawings, and contains means for encircling the post, which is preferably in the form of band means including a front part and a rear part 11 having perforated out-turned flanges 12 and 13 thereon, and through these flanges extend bolts 14 provided with suita- Nol 130,649.
ble nuts, and this hinge means is also arranged to be adjustable and to be used with posts of different sizes. To this post embracingl means the gate hinge part is pivotally connected, as by the use of a pintle and sleeve construction, and preferably the part 1G is provided with a pintle 15 extending upwardly from part 10 and being preferably made integral therewith.
The hinge part on the gate is preferably arranged in the form of a strap hinge 16,'as usual, which is provided with an element or pintle barrel 1'? for receiving the pintle 15, thus swingably connecting the two hinge parts.
I provide meansfor preventing the ele nient 17 from being' moved or pushed ofi the pintle by any upward pressure on the gate, and said means is further arranged to steady the pintle and prevent lateral movement or outward movement thereof from the post or bending or breaking of the pintle. This means preferably includes an element 18 which l arrange in the form of an eye to embrace the top of the pintle, over element 17, and this eye is preferably also made integral with a curved member or band part 19 having perforated ears or flanges 2O through which extend bolts 14, substantially like the bolts in flanges 12. These bolts also extend through perforations in the upper part of flanges 13, thus permitting fastening of the hinge means on posts of various sizes, and also permitting removal of part 19 from the pintle to allow removal or replacement of element 17, when necessary.
in the form shown in Fig. 5 the high rear part 11 is provided in two parts, an upper part 11 and a low-er part 11, which have perforated flanges 13 and 18 thereon, through which extend bolts 14, like the preceding bolts, fcr fastening these flanges to the flanges 2O and 12 respectively, of members 19 and 10, which are identical with the members or parts of the preceding form, as is also the pintle 15 integral on part 10.
It is apparent from thevabove disclosure that l have provided hinge means which is particularly adapted for gates, and the like, and which means comprises hinge parts attachable to the gate post, and to the gate, said parts being pivotally connected, and furthermore that with this construction of hinge I provide means for holding the gate hinge part positively in position on the pintle and hinge part on the gate post, and at the same time provide means for holding the pintle in position and reenitorcing it and to prevent lateral or outward movement thereof away from the gate post or bending or breaking oin said pintle, and that this hinge means is a particularly practical one.
Vihat l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. rlhe combination, With a hinge part attachable to a gate and having a pivoting` element thereon, of hinge means comprising means to adjustably clamp on a gate post and having` a pivoting element for receiving` said pivoting element on the gate, and an eye on said hinge means for embracing one o't' said pivoting elements and preventing removal oit said hinge part and of the gate.
2. The combination, with a hinge part attaehable to a gate and having a pintle engaging part thereon, of hinge means comprising means itastenable on a gate post and having a pintle for receiving said engaging part7 and an eye integral with the means jtastenable on the gate pest for embracing said pintle over said engaging part, thereby preventing removal of said part and also holding the nintle from bending outward from said post, and the eye portion being separable from the pintle portion to permit convenient replacement of said hinge part on the gate.
8. rlhe combination, With a hinge part attachable to a gate andf having a pintle embracing element thereon, of hinge means comprising gate post embracing band means provided with an integral pintle for receiving said element, and an eye extending out- Ward from said post embracing means and engaging an end of said pintle to prevent removal of said element.
4. The combination, with a hinge part attachable to a gate and having a pivoting element, band means for embracing agate post and being adjustable :tor size, a pivoting element integral with said band means for receiving the pivoting element on the gate hinge part, and an eye integral with a por tion of said band means :tor embracing one of said pivoting elements and preventing separation of said elements or removal of the gate. A
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
