A gate hmge for steel fences, and parncularly for large 56] References Cited gates, having means for adjusting the proximity of the UNITED STATES PATENTS gate to the gate 3,533,189 10/1970 Appell et al. 16/130 3 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures PATENTEDMAYZI 19M 3.81 1:149 sum: or 2 v ADJUSTABLE GATE HINGE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A gate hinge for steel fences, having a clamp mounted in one end to be anchored to the gate post, and a hanger at the other end to pivotally receive one end of the gate member, and having means between the clamp end of the hinge and the gate member for laterally adjusting the hinge.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the hinge, showing the clamping means employed.
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the hinge attached to a gate post.
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of a gate post and gate, showing the hinge in position thereon.
FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of the gate member, and
FIG. 5 is a view of a modified form of the hanger.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the drawings, the numerals 1, 1 designate the threaded shafts on which a clamp member 2 is mounted, which is provided with jaws and the post encircling strap 4, which is externally threaded at each end to receive the nuts 5, 5 which encircles the post B, and when the nuts 5, 5 are rotated to draw the clamp member 2 tightly against the post B, the member 2 will be anchored on the post B. Plates 7, 7 are welded to one end of the threaded shafts l, l and the nuts, as 6, 6, may be moved on the shafts l, l and the shafts moved in the member 2 until the plates 7, 7 are in the desired position, and the nuts 6, 6 may be tightened against the member 2 and the plates 7 will become sta' tionary. The hinge pin 8 is welded to the end of the plates 7, 7 and receives the gate clamp member 9, the ports l2, 12 in the gate member 9 receiving the pin 8 and the member 9 having the toothed area as l3, 14 which is brought into contact with the gate A by the strap and nuts ll, 11, the ends of the strap 10 being externally threaded to receive the said nuts 11, 11.
When the member 9 is mounted on the gate frame A and seated on the' pin 8, the gate may be adjusted laterally as desired by loosening the nuts 6, 6 and relocating the shafts 1, l in the member 2.
Where desired, as when a particularly heavy gate is being hung, the brace members 15 may be installed, one end being inserted in the rail end cup 16 anchored to the extended'ends of the plates 7, 7 and the other end inserted in the rail end cup 17 anchored to the gate post B by means of the rail end band 18.
Where gates are being hung requiring a full opening, the plates 7, 7 may be altered in shape as desired, or the U-bolt member 19, as shown in FIG. 5, may be em ployed, having the threaded area as 20, 20 and the hinge pin 21. The clamp 22 receives the threaded areas of the U-bolt l9, and nuts 24, 24 maintain the desired spacing of the U-b0lt. Clamp 23 anchors the member 19 to the post B.
What I claim is:
1. In an adjustable gate hinge, a clamp member adapted to be anchored on a gate post, a strap having its respective ends externally threaded and extending through said clamp member and anchoring said clamp member to said post, threaded shafts spaced from said strap and extending through said clamp member and extending in parallel relation one on each side of said gate post, a hanger mounted on one end of said shafts said hanger having a hinge pin and a gate member pivotaly mounted on said hinge pin, said gate member having means for anchoring same to the end member of a gate, means for adjusting said shafts longitudinally on said clamp member to adjust said gate without disengaging said clamp member from the gate post.
2. The device defined in claim 1 wherein said gate member consists of a channel iron having arcuate toothed jaws and ports adjacent one end forming a lateral passageway to receive said hinge pin, and a U- shaped member extending outwardly from said jaws having the ends thereof externally threaded and extending through said channel iron and bolts on said threaded ends adapted to draw said U-shaped member against the end member of a gate.
3. The device defined in claim 1 wherein said hanger consists of a pair of plates anchored on one end of said threaded shafts and tapered inwardly, the said inwardly tapered ends being joined, said shafts being adjustable longitudinally and independently of the clamp member and said hinge pin being anchored at the point of joinder of the inwardly tapered ends of said plates.

Claims (3)

2. The device defined in claim 1 wherein said gate member consists of a channel iron having arcuate toothed jaws and ports adjacent one end forming a lateral passageway to receive said hinge pin, and a U-shaped member extending outwardly from said jaws having the ends thereof externally threaded and extending through said channel iron and bolts on said threaded ends adapted to draw said U-shaped member against the end member of a gate.
