Description

June 21, 1927. I 1,633,529
c. c. HOFFMAN MAGAZ INE PENCIL Filed Oct. 26, 1925 IN V EN TOR.
( ATTRNEY Patented June 21, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE. I
.CHARLES C. HOFFMAN, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
MAGAZINE PENCIL.
Application filed October 26, 1925. Serial No. 64,769.
For further comprehension, of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention'are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a side sectional view of my improved magazine lead pencil.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1'.
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
"As here embodied my improved magazine lead pencil comprises briefly an outer-case 10,-of any suitable design, and a supporting piece 11 for the lead 12 when in a; position to be used, additional leads 13 being placed in the magazine 14 by removing the cap 15. The clamping members 16 have jaws 17 to grip the lead 12, when the cams 18 on the magazine extension 19 are forced against the protruding portions 20 of the jaws 17 by means of turning or twisting the cap 15 in a clockwise direction, and releasing the lead 12 when the said cap is'turned in the opposite or'counterclockwise direction. The magazine extension 19 having an aperture 23 of suitable diameter to permit of free and easy passage of the lead 13 from the magazine 14. The clamping members 16 are pivoted to the friction guide 21 which is'a slidable fit in the outer case andv is held against a shoulder 22 in the said outer case, by the action of coil spring 27 and has an aperture 24 of suitable diameter to hold the lead 12 from dropping out of place.
In the manipulation of my improved magazine lead pencil, the lead 12 may be gripped by thejaws 17 as heretobefore de-. scribed and bymeans of pushinge he cap inwardly, the said lead 12 may placed in any'desired position, if it is'desired to re-.
lease the jaws from the'lead 12 is accomplished as heretobefore described, at
which times the aperture 24 in the friction guide will hold'the lead 12 from dropping out of place, as also heretobefore described. A spring 17 being super imposed between the extended portion 10" of the outer case 10, and the magazine 14.
It will be understood that my. improved device may be manufactured in any suitable and desirable design and of any materials such as used in devices of this nature.
ferred form, construction, and arrangements of the several elements employed, it .will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privile e of resorting to all such changes as may fie fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what While I have above described the pre- I claim as new, and desire to protect by Let- I ters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A magazine lead-pencil comprising an outer casing, a slidable member mounted in said casing, a pair of jaws pivotally mounted on said slidable member, operating mechanism for said jaws comprising an internal cam member, and a handle for said cam member extending. outside of said casing,
said operating mechanism being adapted to cause said jaws to grip the lead of said pencil when said handle is turned in a clockwise direction and to release said jaws when said handle is turned in'a counterclockwise direction.
\ 2. A magazine lead pencil comprising an outer casing, a slidable member mounted in said casing, jaws pivotally mounted on said slidable member for gripping the.lead of said pencil, an operating mechanism comprising an internal cam member disposed around said jaws and slidabl mounted' in said casing, said cam member eing adapted to cause a gripping action of said aws upon said lead when said cam is turned in a clockwise direction and adapted to move said lead said jaws and said slidable member to-- gether in a forward direction, said jaws be ing releaseable b turning said cam in a counterclockwise 'rection,--a'n d a spring for retracting .said jaws and slidable vmember from thelr forward position.
In testimony whereof I. have-aflixed my signature.
' CHARLES C. HOFFMAN.
