HAND TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 25, 1922;
Application filed Marchfi, 1921. Serial No. 449,473.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HAROLD I. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Warehouse Point, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hand Tool, of which the following is a specification. v
The aim of the present inventlon 1s to provide a hand-tool having various featuresof novelty and advantage. In accordance w1th the present invention, the tool has a cross handle adapted to be folded down along side of the tool shank or stem for compactness and convenience in carrying it around, but complete withdrawal or removal vof the handle is prevented so that loss or displacecli h-eferring to the drawings in detall, a is a tool body or shank havmg a transverse aperture b at one endthrough which extends the cross handle a. In the present instance, I have shown the operating end of the shank in the form of a socket d adapted to receive a member, such,'for instance, as the squared shank of a nut wrench 6, shown 1n dotted lines in the drawing. It is to be un- 'derstood, however, that this disclosure is by way of illustration only, it being evident that the invention may be applied totools of various kinds and types.
The handle 0 is preferably formed from a single metal rod of such diameter as to have a sliding fit inthe aperture 6. One.
end of the handle is of reduced diameter and is bent or curved outwardly as at 12, and then bentinwardly to form a hook 13. It will be seen that when the curved portion 12 is within the aperture 6, the handle positions shown. The hook is of such size and shape as to constitute 'aprojectionwhich prevents withdrawal of the handle. If desired, the other end of thehandle may have a head 14.
or the purpose of frictionally holding shanks and the like within the socket d, the latter is provided with a spring clip f. This clip is formed of a resilient strip of metal bent back upon itself to form a pair of arms 15, 16,'which straddle the wall of the socket, as shown. It will be seen that the socket is apertured as at 17 to accommodate the clip. The arm 15, which may lie within a groove 18 of a socket, is bowed outwardly inter-' invention without departing from the scope of the following claims, it being understood thatthe present disclosure of my invention is by way of illustrationionly and it is not 7 changes which are within the spirit of the I to be taken as restrictiveof my conception.
I cla m as my invention 1. A tool shank havmg a transverse aperture; and a handle comprising a rod of substantially the same diameter as said aperture and adapted to slidably fittherein and having a portion of reduceddiameter in all directions with a reverse bend so as to permit the folding ofthe handle along side said tool shank and prevent withdrawal-of the han- I dle from said aperture.
2. A tool shank having a transverse aperture of substantially uniform diameter throughout; and a handle'slidable within said aperture and having a portion of reduced diameter in all directions bentto permit the handle to be folded down alongside.
of said shank, and'a projectionon the end i of said bent portion for-preventing complete withdrawal of the handle from said aper- V ".l g
3. A tool shank having a transverse aperture ,and a handle slidable within said aperture and having a portion bent at an angle to the length of the handle, said handle bewe ma s Q ing 01"? reduced diameter in the direction f bend to permit the latter to be folded down along side of the shank, the free end of said reduced portion being of hoeked shape to prevent complete Withdrawal of the handle from said aperture.
4. A tool shank having a transverse aperture; a handle slidable fitting therein and comprising a rod having an integral reduced end provided with a. double bend for permitting the handle to be folded down along side of the shank While preventing complete Withdrawal of the handle.
