Be it known that I, BERT J. WATERBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walnut Grove, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented newl and useful Improvements in Barrel-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a tool for handling barrels and particularly pertains te a hook therefor. v

It `is the nincipal object of the present in\\'ention to provide a simple hook by `which barrels may be engaged and handled when desired and is especially useful in connection with the metal barrels now in common use. The present device is simple in its construction and insures that the barrel may be easily grasped and held without binding the hand or putting the arms of the user under undue strain.

The present invention contemplates the use of a handle member having a bifurcated opposite end terminating with hooks which may engage the chine of a barrel, said tool being further provided with a rigid finger adapted to project at right angles to the plane of the handle and hook members and to operate in a manner to permit a satisfactory gripping action on the barrel.

The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which-d Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a view showing a fragmentary portion of the barrel and further disclosingl the application of the present invention thereto.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a handle member.` This handle is formed of a piece of metal bent to provide an elliptical opening through which the hand may be placed. Extending in a plane with the handle and from one side thereof, is a straight body member ll. This member is disposed upon the transverse axis of the handle. This body member is clipped at its opposite end to form a pair of arms 12 and 13. The arms are each provided with a hook 14, by which the rim or chine of abarrel may be engaged. EX-

tending outwardly from the body member 11 and at right angles to the plane of the handle and the arms 12 and 18 is a fulcrum finger 15. This finger may be of any suitable length and coperates with the hook member in providing a suitable gripping action for the barrel when it is lifted by the handle. 4

In operation of the present device it will be readily understood that the hook is grasped. by the handle 10 and that the hook member 14: may be disposed around any protruding rim at the head of the barrel. This done, the fulcrum member 15 will be forced down against the barrel, either its head or by-portion, and when. a lifting1 action takes place, the strain will be dis--` posed upon the fulcrum member to draw the hook against their engagement upon the barrel and to insure that the structure properly holds the barrel While it is lifted.

It will thus be seen that although the present invention is quite simple in its construction, yet it satisfactorily accomplishes the result intended by a means which is decidedly simple and economical in its manufacture.

Vhile I have shown the vpresent form of my invention, it will `be understood that various changes may be made in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A barrel hook having a handle, arpair of arms emanating therefrom and having hooked ends and a fulcrum finger extend ing outwardly from the structure and in a plane at right angles to that of the handle and the arm.

comprising a handle member, a shank eX- tending therefrom, a bifurcated portion formed at the end of said shank andtermi nating in a hook and a fulcrum member extending from said shank and at right angles to the plane of the bifurcated portion.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a handle loop, a shank formed and a, fulerurn member extending outwardly ,from the sha-nk and n a plane at right angles to the arm and upon the same side of the arm as thev hook.` l
