EDWARD e. man, or New Yoan, rv. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAUNDRY-REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,302, dated May 18, 1875 application liled April l0, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. BIKE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Washing- List Indicators or Registers', of which the fol. lowing is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and reliable register or indicator which will denote and point out the number of any article, the total number of pieces, the number of weeks due, or any similar desired memorandum. It is designed to obviate the use of printed lists, book-lists, tablets, dto., of every kind and description now in use. It is adapted for general use as well as for single persons, families, hotels, steamboats, etc.
In the drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line A B, and Fig. 3 is a modifica tion or extension of that shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
In carrying out my invei'ition, I print, stamp, or otherwise mark on a card of suitable size and shape the following letters, words, and figures: Ony the left-hand end a column or series of words indicating the kind of articles, such as shirtsf7 collars, 85e. 0n the center of the card, to the right of the above column of words, I perforate a series of lines and columns of holes, a line for each separate article, and a column for each separate number, the figures being placed above each column. Below the columns of words and perforations, as above, I imprint the words and figures for designating the total number of pieces, each figure being provided with a perforated hole. On the right-hand end of the card I provide a column of words, figures, and perforated holes for indicating the number of weeks due. Between the column of words on the left that indicate the kind of article and lines of perfbrations under the line of figures, I introduce a similar column of perforations, into which are inserted a series of movable pins or their equivalents. This column of pins is designated by the figure o, and in these perforations the pins are set, when they are not in use, for denoting to prevent it slipping.
Some ligure or article. I also provide a perforated hole and pin for same in the lower line of figures for indicating the number of pieces. and pin in the column of words, figures, and perforations on the lett-hand end for indicating the number of weeks due.
My invention is designed to be used as follows: If it is desired to indicate ten shirts, the piu opposite the word shirts77 is removed and inserted in the hole, in the same line, underneath the figure I0, the same operation being followed in regard to the other articles. The whole number is then footed up, and the pin in the hole opposite the words number of pieces77 removed and inserted in the hole corresponding to the number of the articles.
It is obvious that the lists of articles, num bers, and perforated holes can be extended to any desired degree for designating large quantities, the same general plan being followed.
YVhile I prefer the arrangement as described and shown in the drawings, it is obvious that any other form of placing the words, letters, and figures or perforations and pins will fully accomplish the same general results. I therefore do not confine myself to the exact arrangement of the same as shown, for the reasons as stated.
In some cases it may be found desirable to construct the card or indicator as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In lieu of the lines of perforated holes I have made a series of slots, extending the width of the line of figures, opposite each of the words in the column, on the left-hand end of the card, for designating the kind of articles. In these slots I insert a pin or button, somewhat larger than the width of the slot, its base reduced so as to pass through the slot. It is then fastened, on the reverse of the indicator-card, to a sliding piece made in such form that it acts as a spring and will hug closely to the card By sliding the button or pin in the slot to a position beneath any figure it will there remain and indicate as in the case of the pins and perforations, as hereinbefore described.
Ihis card, scale, or indicator may be made from wood, paper, or sheet metal ot' any kind, and may be printed, stamped, or otherwise I also provide a similar perforationV marked and ornamented by painting, japanning, or plating, or by such other process as fancy and taste may call for. The whole is to be inclosed within an ornamental case or box, provided with a lock and key, orother suitable fastening. rlhis method ot' constructionis preferred, as it permits the carrying of the register in a trunk when traveling, and it may also be carried in the pocket without any liability of disarranging or losing the pins, as the cover of the case, when closed, rests upon the top or heads ofthe pins, thus holding` them securely in place.
I am aware that Washinglist registers have heretofore been made and used, but such registers have not been adapted for the purposes or constructed as herein indicated. I make no claim to such registers unless inclosed within a case or box, or the equivalent ot' the general form as I have fully shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A Washing-list indicator or register, adapted for denoting the number ot` any article, the total number ot' pieces, and the number ot' Weeks due, by means of a registering-scale, having imprinted or stamped upon its face the letters, Words, and gures, arranged substantially as shown and described, and provided with a series ot pins and perforated holes, or pins or buttons and slides, for the purpose of arbitrarily fixing or pointing out any desired letter, Word, or figure on said registering-scale, the Whole inclosed within a case or box, and combined, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes as herein shown and described.
