Description

PATENTED SEPT." 1 1903.

DISPLAY DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 12 1902 N0 MODEL WITNESSES Arrow/m8 THE NORRIS uns ca. mom-u'ruo WASH UNITED STATES Patented September 1, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,888, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed July 12,1902. Serial No. 115,389. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN CALEB PERCY IVEBBER, a subject of the King of Great Brit- 'ain, residing at Plymouth, in the county of of this class by means of which cards giving the price and description of various articles may be placed together upon or in a suitable holder and manipulated so as to show the names of various articles and also various prices therefor, the cards and holderbein g of novel form and construction.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa-' rate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of one form of my improved display device complete; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modification; Fig. 4, a face View of one form of a descrip tion card which I employ; Fig. 5, a front view of one form of a price-card which I employ; Fig. 6, a view of a card which forms a part of the device shown in Fig. 3; Fig. '7, a side view of aback card which formsa part of devices shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; and Fig. 8, a back view of a part of the device, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide a front or base plate a, which may be composed of paper, aluminium, or other material and upon which may be printed, painted, or stamped a suitable design, description, or both.
In the form shown in Fig. l I provide the base-plate a with two slots or openings a and a the upper slot a being longer than the lower slot (6*, but which may be of any size or shape, and on the back of the base-plate a I secure in any desired manner a series of two inscriptions b and b consisting of the articles of merchandise and matter descriptive thereof, and each of said lines b and b is so situated on the plate Z) as to be entirely visible in the opening a of the base-plate a when the plate I) is placed in the pocket at, either top or bottom edge uppermost. It will be apparent that names and descriptive matter may be placed upon both sides of the plate I) in the positions indicated, the object of which is that the plate I) may be placed in the pocket a in four different positions, so as to expose each of four different lines of printed matter in the opening a of the base-plate a. I also provide two openings or indentations b and b on the upper and lower edges, respectively, of the plate I), and these indentations correspond with the slot a of the baseplate a in each of the two positions of the plate I)" when placed in the pocket a. I also provide an octagonal plate a of the same size as the plate I) (shown in Fig. 5) and which has a price-mark printed or otherwise placed upon each of the eight edges of each side thereof, and the price-marks correspond in position to the slota of the base-plate a and the indentations b and b of the plate Z). It will be apparent that by this construction four different names of articles may be shown in four different positions of the plate I) at the slot (L2, while sixteen different price-marks may be alternately shown in the slot 0. when the plates 1) and c are placed in the pocket a of the base-plate a. At cl in Fig. 7 I have shown an octagonal plate corresponding to the plates Z) and c and which is placed be hind the plates Z1 and c to protect the same and hold them firmly when placed in the pocket a In Figs. 3, G, and 8 I have shown a modification of my invention in which I employ a base-plate 2, similar to the base-plate a, with this difference: Instead of the two slots (0 and a I provide an opening 6 octagonal in A LA shape and slightly smaller than the plates Z c, and d, and slots similar to a and a of the base-plate a are provided in an octagonal plate f, which is of the same size as the plates 1), c, and d. The reason for this modification is that in the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 only one size of lettering may be used with the openings a and a of the base-plate (1, whereas when larger or smaller matter on the plates 1) and c is desired corresponding openings f and f are provided inthe plate f, and there may be any number of different plates similar to f provided and still be employed alternately with the plate 6. Although in the drawings I have shown the supplementary plates octagonal in form, I do not limit myself to this particular shape, as they may be of any shape or size, the base plate and pocket secured thereto to be of corresponding shape and size, and hooks or other devices may be secured to or be a part of the base-plate for the purpose of hanging same and also supporting articles therefrom.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
4 1. A display device of the class described, comprising a plate having an opening and a keeper secured to the back thereof beneath said opening, a cord placed in said keeper back of said plate and provided in the upper portion thereof with a transverse opening and in the bottom thereof with another opening, a descriptive card placed back of said firstnamed card, and provided in the top and bottom thereof with openings, and a'price-card placed back of said descriptive card, all of said cards being octagonal in form and said keeper being also octagonal in form, substantially as shown and described.
2. A display device of the class described, comprising a plate having transverse openings and an octagonal keeper at the back thereof below said openings, an octagonal descriptive card placed in said keeper back of said plate and provided with openings and an octagonal price-card placed in said keeper back of said descriptive card, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 30th day of June, 1902.
