UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. KENNEDY, OE ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,345, dated March 26, 1889.
Application tiled January ll, 1889. Serial No. 296,081. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofA this specification.
My invention relates to improved records for libraries or other purposes, for recording the article loaned.
The invention consists of a board or plate having fixed numbers marked thereon corresponding to the books or other articles numbered in the library or stock with corresponding numbered removable` pegs, whereby any one is enabled at a glance to ascertain what books or articles have been loaned, also what books are in the library.
It further consists in combiningf with said board or plate columns for names with holes opposite each to receive pegs removed from the board, whereby anyone is also enabled to ascertain to whom the book or article has been loaned, all as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a case showing my improved record and the manner of operating the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the pegs removed.
A boX or case, A, of any suitable form or y outline and ornamentation,is employed, having a door, A', of glass, by which the same can be closed and locked to prevent the accidental removal or displacement of the pegs and at the same time afford full inspection. In this case is mounted a board or plate, B, preferably arranged at the top and running transversely thereof, and which is provided with lines of numbers b in one or a series of rows corresponding to the number of books or other articles to be loaned.
Adjacent to the numbers are placed holes or perforations h', either arranged above, below, or at the sides of the numbers, as shall 5o be found most desirable, and which holes are adapted to receive pegs O, having numbers thereon corresponding to the number on the board or plate by which they are placed.
Below the numbered plate or board are arranged a series of columns divided by plates D, in which plates are arranged a series of holes or perforations, d, in vertical lines, leaving spaces between each of the plates and opposite io said perforations for recording the name of the borrower, the address, or remarks relating thereto. These receptacles for the recording of names can be filled in either with ruled paper held by clasps E at the bottom and top, as shown, or a slate or similar device can be secured in the receptacle, or, if preferred, any well-known device may be att-ached to receive a ticket with name, address, and date the book or article was taken out or loaned, as shall be found most desirable. Below the columns are preferably arranged drawers adapted to receive lists or catalogues of the books or the articles to be loaned.
The device thus constructed may either form a part of a desk or be made in the form of a separate case to be fastened against the wall.
The operation of Ythe device is as follows: When all the books or articles are in, all, the holes or perforations with the numbered pegs will be full; but when a book or article is borrowed or taken out, the peg corresponding thereto is removed and inserted in the charging-column opposite to the name of the borrower. Thus, as illustrated in the drawings, books numbered 3, 5, l0, ll, l5, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, and 2.() would be shown as loaned, the pegs being removed opposite to said numbers, said pegs being placed in the holes or perforations in the vertical column opposite the name of the party to whom the book was loaned. It will thus be seen that with this device any one can ascertain at a glance what books or articles are out, and also at the same time sec to whom the same is charged, the advantage of which will be readily apparent without further description.
Having now described my invention, I clalln- In a record device, a board or plate having holes or perforationsformed therein and Ioo ln testimony whereof I affix mysignature in fixed numbers adjacent to the holes or perfothe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
rations ooi-responding to the articles orbooks to be loaned, and removable pegs to fit the holes or perforations, in combination with a 5 name-Column provided with holes or perfora tions to receive the numbered pegs when removed from the boa-rd or plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE lV. KENNEDY.

HORACE D. MUNsoN, Jr., WILLIAM J. ATWELL.
