UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. PLYMPTON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN VESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,246, dated May 11, 1875; application filed October 31, 1874. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. PLYMrToN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Suspenders and Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
' reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my suspender as worn. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my suspender, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention relates to devices which are adapted to sustain pantaloons upon the person of the wearer.
The object of the invention is to do away with the webbing commonly used in suspenders which pass over the shoulders and to this end the nature of the invention consists in combining with a vest or waistcoat a strap having upon one end a button-hole and upon the other a buckle, through a loop of which is passed a second strap having a button-hole in each end, whereby I am enabled to dispense with the usual cross-straps passing over the shoulders of the wearer by attaching the former strap removably to the lower part of the vest, and the latter to the waistband of the pantaloons, greatly adding to the comfort of the wearer, and saving expense, while holding the vest down, and preventing it from drawing up or wrinkling, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a vest or waistcoat, which, for the sake of illustration, has been drawn in Fig. 1 upon the person of the wearer, and B is a pair of pantaloons, having a waistband, 1), upon which are rigidly sewed buttons at, two in number, at each side thereof. 0 designates a short strap, which may be of leather, of webbing, or of any elastic material, having in one end a button-hole, c, and upon its other end a buckle, D, as shown in Fig. 2. This buckle is of the usual construction, having a vibrating shaft, (2, with teeth (1, with its bearings in the vertical edges of a rectangular frame, so as to leave a space between the said shaft and the lower side of the frame, through which is passed a second strap, E, having button-holes in each end, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
I use my improved suspender in the following manner: The buttons (1. are passed into the button-holes upon both ends of the strap E, and the button-hole c of strap 0 is passed over a button, 1), upon the inside of the vest, at or near the side scams 8 thereof. The end of strap 0 is then drawn out through the buckle D until a comfortable degree of support of the pantaloons has been obtained.
It will be seen that in my improved suspenders l dispense with the cross-straps passing over each shoulder; that by using the waistcoat as a substitute therefor, the weight of the pants is distributed over the whole shoulder, and not over a narrow portion thereof, as is the case where the cross-straps are used; also, that the back of the vest is in no way affected by attaching the suspenders to its sides, thereby allowing the clothing to rest lightly against the person, and not in close contact with the body, as when the said straps are employed-an advantage to be readily appreciated in hot weather.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The vest A, provided with buttons on the lower part of its inside, in combination with the strap 0, having a button-hole, c, at its upper end, and abuckle, D, at its lower end, and strap E, provided with button -holes at each end, which engage with buttons at a on the waistband, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 7 of two witnesses.
CHARLES R. PLYMPTON. Witnesses:
GWYN D. McGoY, JAMES B. FREDENBURG.
