UNITE STATES JOHN?. NIssEN, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SWEATER.
Application filed. May 3,
rlhe present invention relates to improvements in sweaters or knitted jackets, and the object is to provide an improvement in the form of a combined collar `and hood, which does not change the normal appearance of the sweater or jacket when the collar is in its usual position. At the same time a hood is secured which will fit over and effectively cover the head of the wearer, leaving his face exposed and yet binding snugly though comfortably about the face. i
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a sweater with the collar in, its lay-f.
down or usual position,
Figure 2 is a similar view of the hood in operative position on the head of the wearer,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective View showing the collar raised with the hood in its folded position,
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing the hood piece partly turned to its operative position,
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through the hood when in its operative position, asV illustrated in Figure 2,
Figure 6 is a detail sectional View through the collar and hood piece when in the position illustrated in Figure 1.
In the embodiment disclosed, the sweater or jacket may be of the usual construction, comprising a knitted body 7 with knitted sleeves S. Carried by the top of the body 7 is a collar, preferably composed of a central upwardly flared knitted section 9 with rows of loops ruiming vertically, and side sections 1() composed of rows of loops running horizontally. This collar, as illustrated in Figure l, normally lies flat over the upper portion or back of the body 7 but can be elevated as illustrated in Figure 2 around the neck and rear portion of the bead of the wearer. Its rear margin is formed on a gen. erally convex curve as shown at 1l.
Carried by this collar 9-10 is a hood piece designated generally by the reference numeral 12. The hood piece has a generally convexedly curved outer margin 13 corresponding to the curved margin 11 of the collar and suitably seamed thereto. The inner margin of this hood piece is straight and is designated 14. The hood piece is of knitted material and the margin 14 is also formed of knitted material, the yarn thereof 1924. Serial N0. 710,895.
being preferably 'of liner quality than` the body'port-ion 12 and of smaller loops, making an elastic binding. Preferably the inner face of the hood piece is of fleecy material but the outer portion corresponds generally in color and form to the collar, as shown in4 yor looped beneath the collar. lThe sweater or jacketthus has a normal appearance. When it is desired to use the hood the collar is swung upward, as illustrated in Figure 4. The free, margin of the hood piece isV then available and can be turned upwardly over.
the head where itwill assume the position `shown in Figure 2. A button 15 on one sideV of the collar anda loop 16 for receiving the saine on the other side of the collar at the ends of the hood piece serve toy secure the hood snugly beneath the chin. Due to the form of the collar and hood piece and the curved margins of the two parts which are secured together the hood will fit properly over the head and the elastic margin 14 will draw the free edge of said hood inwardly so that it will lit. about the face of the wearer, as shown in Figures 2 and 5.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and ininor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
That I claim is:
1. The combination with a knitted jacket and a knitted collar carried thereby and adapted to lie over the back of the jacket or be raised about the wearers neck, of a hood piece carried bythe underside of the collar and overlaid by the saine when the collar is in its lower position, said hood piece having its outer margin secured to the collar and its inner margin free therefrom and terminating at points in rear of the body of the jacket, and said inner margin being formed of elastic material that will effect a close fit about the face of the wearer when the collar is raised and the hood piece the jacket for deiachably fastening togetherbeneath the chin, the collar and ende oi the hood pieoe.
2. The combination "with a knitted jacket and af kni ted collar Comprising a central,
- `npWardly'iiared knitted Central Section and VASide `sect-ione connected to opposite sides ofA the same, with the linee of loops .in angular relation to thoae ot the central section, of a. hood `section extending across the outer end of the central Section and connected to the outer .margin ot' the saine, `eaid hood Section having; tapered erd portions Secured to the outer portions of the eide eeetirme Said hood i piece conformingl to the Shape ot' the head f and having a taeeenrronmling free margin of ner knit than the Vmain portion7 and means at the jnnotnre ot the tapered ends ofthe hood section with tlie"eicle lsections for detaohably securing Vtof ether said por-y tione beneath the chin of the wearer.f
3. `The combination with a knitted jacket `and a knitted collar carried thereby and comprising a central upwardlyflared knitted central section, and side sections knitted.
thereto, said collar having` a oonvexedljT eurvedrear edge, of a hood seetion extend-- irrer Straight aeroes the outer free portion of the collar and having,y a eonvexedly curved rear edge corresponding to and secured to the rear edge o'fi the central and eide Sections of thecollarjsaid hood Section having' a substantially Straight inneredge free `trom and extending across the collar seetione between their inner and outer edges.
d. The combination with ay knitted jacket and va' knitted collar arried thorel and comprisingv a Central up wardlyidared knitted section, and eide sections knitted thereto,
aaid eolar having; a eonvexedly curved rear edge,r of a hood section extending Straight across the outer free portion of the eollar and lhaving n eonvexedly curved rear edge oorrespondinp; to and secured to the rear edge of the oentraland Side sections of the collar,
eaid hood Section ,having a substantially' straight inner edne tree tronrand vmtendiiiig aeroes the collar sections between their inner and onter edges, said hood section tapering to substantially terminal points, and means at Said pointe and on the outer Yedge `of'the collar in spaced relation to the bodjY of the jacket for securing the ends of the hood piece together beneath .the chin of the wearer.
