Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELKAN ADLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,810, dated December 23, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELKAN ADLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Mattresses and Their Adaptation to Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a plan, Iiig. 2, a section in a vertical plane, Fig. 3, one of the caps c detached, Fig. 1l, modification of cap.
My device is simply an improvement upon other and well known mattresses in public use remedying the prominent defects found in them, and completing a more perfect and cheap spring mattress than I am now acquainted with.
The construction is as follows: I form a framework or bottom of slats c, c, upon which I aliiX a series of hourglass, or other efcient spiral springs b, these springs I cap at the top with a convex metal cap c, on each, which has four ears or projections, with holes in them, as clearly shown in the details Fig. 3, or with hooks formed upon the ears as seen in Fig. 4, and Fig. l. All the caps of the series are connected together by straps or bands of any flexible material as seen in Fig. l, or they may be connected by metal links that are connected with the ears on the caps the whole set of springs are surrounded by the sides, head, and foot pieces d, CZ, c, c, of the bedstead or by a separate frame as the case may be.
The outside row of caps c, are connected with the permanent sides of the bedstead or frame above named by small spiral springs s, shown clearly in the drawing Fig. l. I thus make a spring bottom that is perfectly elastic, while I insure the retention of the springs in their places, and at the same time allow them free action and obtain a cheap mode of construction.
I am aware that links and horizontal springs have been used with the perpendicular springs of a mattress to hold such perpendicular springs in proper position but they failed in their object on account of the want of rigidity of the wire springs to which the links were affixed and the chafing of the eX- posed wire springs.
I do not however claim any such device or a cap for the springs when used alone without the combination therewith of links and check or side springs for keeping the upright springs in position nor do I claim either links straps or side springs when simply connected with the upright springs directly as such connection will not afford the stability or durability I contemplate by my combination but Having thus fully described my improved mattress what I claim therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The combination of the metal caps connecting links or straps and springs in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
ELKAN ADLER.
