SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 15,900, dated October 14, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHRDER, of New York, in the county and State of New, York, have invented a new and Im proved Spring-Bottom for Sofas, Bedsteads, &c.;` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nat-ure of my invention consists in the arrangement of spiral springs laying parallel to each other and horizontal under the seat or bedstead bottom. Each row being at the same time made of continuous wire and likewise connected together by a wire passing through the center of said springs. The whole being fastened to the frame, thereby forming an elastic bottom.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the frame of the bottom covered over by a covering B and lining O with the usual filling between the two. Under the lining O the" spiral springs D lie `horizontally. The same are made by being wound upon wooden blocks about l inch in diameter and about live (5) inches in length. The wire from one spring is then stretched to the other block the required distance of about six inches and then wound around this next block, and so on until the required length between one side of the frame and the other side is obtained. By this arrangement the springs will of necessity require to be right handed and left handed. The ends are then passed through eyes (a)- fast on the frames.
