Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT FFTQE.
JACOB COOVER, OF CI-IAMBERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 19,410, dated February 23, 18-58.
To all whom it may concer/n.
Be it known that I, JACOB CoovER, of Chambersburg, county of Franklin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Elastic Spring-Bottoms for Beds, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the manner of fastening the springs to the slats, the way of tightening the spring, and the slats as constructed all as hereinafter shown.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my invention I use any of the materials common for such purposes.
Figure 1, is a plan view. Fig. 2, is a plan view with the top slats removed. Fig. 8, a bottom plan view. Fig. 4, a view of the bottom folded together. Fig. 5 is a section showing one slat with joints in it.
In Fig. 1, A the frames; B, the hinges for folding the same; C, the stays to which the top slats are attached; D, the top slats; E, cross stays for steadying the same; M cross bars.
In Fig. 2, F the springs to which are at. tached upper and under slats on frames A, Gr plates attached to one end of slats and resting on cross bars M, and which are raised or lowered by screws H for tightening springs J the holes for inserting or removing the ends of springs F, to such parts of the bed as desired; K hooks or clamps for holding springs down M cross bars.
In Figf, A the frame; D, the slats; L, the hinges for slats D to work on; M cross bars attached to frames A; Gr plates for forming a joint in slats D', for the purpose of raising or lowering them as described in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4, A, the frames; B, the hinges; D, the top slats; F, the springs; H the screws for raising or lowering slats D; N the bands for securing the corners and sides of frames A; O wires attached to frames A, and cross bars M.
In Fig. 5, D, the slats raised by means of screws H; G, the joint plate; L, the hinges.
In the operation of my invention the top slats D are constructed of a series of small slats connected with stays which form the easiest and most elastic bottoms for beds, or mattresses. The springs are fastened to the top slats in the same manner that they are fastened to the lower ones. slats D, on which the springs rest have a joint by means of plates Gr, and hinges L, a thumb screw H passing through the plates and resting on cross bar M, is for the purpose of lowering and raising the slat, if the bed should sink in the center, by turning the screw it can be raised to a proper height and thus stiffen the springs. The slats D and D on one side are provided at every inch or two with a small hook or clamp either of which will do, and opposite each hook or clamp on the other edge of the slat a small hole. The ends of the springs are so formed that when the last coil of the springs opposite the ends is placed under the hook or clamp the end will force into the hole opposite the hook or clamp which will hold the springs to their place until the end of the spring is removed from the hole again. By being fastened in this way the springs may be removed from one part of the bed to another as required or should the springs be too strong some of them may be readily taken out or if too weak more can be put in or those in the bed changed so as to bring the strongest springs where the most strain is on them. Heavy persons require more spring under the body that light ones so as to keep the head and feet on a level with the body. This has been the great difficulty in other spring beds now in use whereas in this bed any person can arrange the springs or have them arranged to suit themselves.
I am aware that spiral springs and folding beds are not new, but I do not know of any other bed or bed bottom in which the springs are so easily fastened and so readily moved to any part of the bed desired, this bottom may be upholstered and thus form of itself a complete bed or it may be used as a bed bottom.
The lower Having thus fully cleseriloeol` the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Constrnoting the lower slats D with joint at or near the Center by means of plate Gr, and hinges L, and the screw H, passing through plates G, for raising and lowering the slats as set forth.
J ACOB COOVER.
