IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,070, dated May 11, 1875 application led March 29, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM HIMELRIGH and J AOOB SMITH, of Franklin township, Summit county, Ohio, haveinvented an Improvement in Buckles, of which the following is a specification Our invention relates to all classes of strapbuckles, and its object is to rapidly and easily attach the buckle to the strap without sewing, cutting, or bending the strap, by forming upon the rear or base of the buckle a rectangular tube, having' an inside size to tit the strap to be attached, and securing the strap therein by depressing upon the strap Within the tube toothedshaped portions ot' the tube, formed by V-shaped incisions therein.
Our invention will be readily understood by reference to Figures l and 2 of the accompanying drawing, representing, respectively, a bottom and top perspective view of a buckle embodying our improvement.
A is the buckle, made in the ordinary form, and having the tongue G, but having the base prolonged in the form of a hollow prism, B, having a rectangular orifice, C, therein, of a suitable size to receive the strap to be attached. Through the under side of this prism or tube is cut a V-shaped incision, which forms the tooth D, and at E is hole to receive a rivet.
To attach the strap it is forced into the oritice C and the point D forced down into it by a bloW from a hammer, which swells the leather to fit and till the orifice C, and a rivet is fastened through strap and buckle at the point E. By this means the strap is more firmly attached than in the method in ordinary use, the labor of sewing and loss of stock from the lap of the strap, saved, While the strap is not as liable to break as when bent around the base ot' the buckle, as is done in the common way of attachin g buckles.
One or more teeth, D, may be formed and used to fasten the strap, with or without the rivet, as desired.
The loop F is formed on the top ofthe buckle, in one piece with it.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- The combination of the tongue G, loop F, and tubular extension B, having a tooth, D, constructed to be applied to the strap, substantially as described.
WILLIAM HIMELRIGH. JACOB SMITH.
