IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COIVIBS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [62,754, dated May 4, 1875; application filed September 22, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. KELLOGG, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Curry-Combs, of which the fol"- lowing is a specification This invention is designed to improve the construction of curry-combs of a class, an example of which is shown in the patent of Wm. Beach, granted originally March 13, A. D. 1849, and subsequently reissued. In this pattern of curry-combs the tooth-bars have heretofore been united by end pieces, either made of thin sheet metal or malleable cast-iron, and provided with lugs or butts for encircling the legs of the wire handle-frame. Both these end pieces are practically very defectivethe sheet-iron one because it does not afford the required rigidity to the structure of the comb, and is, by the constant knocking to which the comb is subjected in use to clear its toothbars, liable to be bent out of shape, so as to release the wire ends of the handle-frame, and

the malleable cast-iron one because, by reason of its greater or less brittleness, its butts are liable to be broken off by knocking; besides, the rivets for securing the toothbars are cast on these malleable-iron end pieces, and are liable to break off. For obtaining the greatest possible strength without undue clumsiness, I make my end pieces of stout plate or wrought iron; and my improvement consists in the peculiar manner of wrapping the lugs around the wire handle-frame-namely, in such a way that the ends of the lugs shall not quite touch the flat part of the end piece, thus enabling me to so tightly wrap the lugs on the wire that they will hold it very firmly, using extra rivots for securing the tooth-bars to the end pieces, and riveting the ends of the wire handle-frame down on the outer lugs of the end pieces, to prevent their disengagement. My comb thus made up is easily distinguishable from all other combs now known by the peculiarities of construction above set out.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved currycomb.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the wroughtmetal end pieces constructed for double-riveting one of the tooth-bars. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of such an end piece intended to be united to the several tooth-bars by a single rivet to each. I

The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.

The comb is made up of the toothbars A, end pieces B, wire handle-frame (J, and handle I), as usual. The end pieces are made of stout plate-iron, struck up by dies, and provided with projecting lugs subsequently bent up to encircle the legs of the wire frame, forming butts b and b, the ends of the wire frame being headed or riveted down on the outer butts b, as at c. The butts also serve as knockers, and are tightly wrapped around the wire, so as to assume about the form best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. Their ends should not quite touch the flat part of the end pieces, for the reason above stated.

The toothbars may be united to the end pieces by a single rivet at each end; but for additional strength one or all of the tooth-bars may be double-riveted, as shown in connection with one of them in Fig. 1. Thus united the comb cannot be knocked out of shape as long as the rivets remain intact.

What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed curry-comb, composed of the toothbars A, secured by separate rivets, stout wrought-iron end pieces B, handle D, and wire handle-frame O, the end pieces having lugs b and I) wrapped around the wire, as stated, and the ends of the wire being riveted down on the outer butts or lugs, all as specified.
