Description

J. THOMAS.
HARNESS PAD.
(No Model.)
No. 391,661. Patented Oct. 23, 1888.

JOHN THOMAS, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IO\VA.
HARNESS PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,661, dated October 23, 1888.
Application tiled August 13, 1888. Serial No. 282,646.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS, of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new Improvement in Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection withaccompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure l, a perspective view of the pad complete; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same; Fig. 3, a transverse section through the overlapping ends of the yoke and jockeys; Fig. 4, an outside view of one of the jockeys; Fig. 5, an under side view of one end of the yoke.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of harness-pads in which the jockeys and yoke are made of metal, and is an improvement upon the invention for which Letters Patent of the United States,No. 244, 338, were granted to me July 12, 1881. In that patent the whole pad, including the jockeys, is made in one piece.
The object of my present invention is to construct the pad in three parts, the central part forming a yoke with the jockeys attached to each end; but so that when united they are substantially as strong and firm as if made integral, as in my previous patent before referred to; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
A represents the central or yoke portion, which is constructed with an opening, a, at the center for the attachment of the waterhook. This yoke extends each side toward the jockeys and terminates at each end in a tongue, B.
O 0 represent the twojockeys. The upper end of each jockey is constructed with a re cess, D, corresponding in shape to the tongueshaped ends of the yoke. The yoke upon the under side at each end is constructed with a recess, E, which corresponds to the recessed end of thejockey, and so that the two may be set together, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
Through the lapping ends of the respective (No model.)
parts a hole, a, is formed, through which the terret F, or other suitable bolt, is introduced and there secured, serving to bind thejockeys to the yoke. The recessed portions of the two parts prevent lateral movement of either part on the other, so that the two parts are firmly held,
As an additional protection against lateral movement of the parts, holes or notches b are made in the recessed end of the jockey, and corresponding studs, d, are formed on the corresponding end of the yoke, which interlock with the notches or holes in the jockey, as seen in Fig. 2. These notches and studs may be formed integral with their respective parts in the process of casting.
A clip, G, is applied under each jockey to facilitate their attachment, and the jockeys are also provided with what I call the .safetyhook H of my belorementioned patent.
1. The herein-described harness-pad, con sisting of the yoke A, terminating at each end in a tongue, B, with a recess upon the under side of the tongue, the two jockeys G 0, each constructed with a recess corresponding to the tongue of the jockey, and-the upper end of the jockeys corresponding to the recesses upon the under side of the yoke, with a bolt through said overlapping portions of the jockeys and yoke as a means for securing said parts together, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the yoke A, tern1inating at each end in a tongue, B. and recessed upon its under side at each end with thejockeys O O, the upper end of each recessed corresponding to the tongues on the ends of the yoke and terminating in shape corresponding to the recess upon the under side of the yoke, the corresponding ends :flthe said yoke and jockeys constructed the one li h holes or recesses b and the other with C01 nonding studs,d,the terret extending through the over lapping ends of the said parts as a bolt to secure the said parts together, substantially as described.
JOHN THOMAS.
