WINDOW-CLEANING DEVICE.
Application filed May 29, 1925.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning windows and has as its principal object the provision of a simple and easily operated device adapted to be quickly and easily applied to a window sash, and adapted to clean the outside of the window pane effectively and rapidly while the operator manipulates Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the same. l
S, S indicate the upper and lower sashes, respectively, of an ordinary window structure. 10 indicates a housing or body member, preferably produced ofV stout sheet metal bent to a general U-shape in cross section, with one side thereof extended farther than the other and bent'inward, as indicated at 11. The dimension of this housing is such that it is adapted to be fitted. upon the top of the sash of an ordinary window with suliieient clearance for free movement. Within this housing, and adjacenty the inner corners thereof, are mounted longitudinally-extending small rollers 12, 13 spaced inward from the wall of thel housing sulliciently to permit a web or band 14 of stout flexible material, such as stout canvas or webbing, to -be passed around said rollers within the housing with its end portions 1li, 141" extending downward from the housing at each side of the window when the device is in place.
The side 1111' of this band which extends outside the window sash is reinforced intermediate the length thereof, as indicated at 15, and preferably is provided with aseries of eyelets 16, these typifying any suitable provision for detachably securing a swab 17, or like cleaning member, to the band. This swab is preferably secured detachably to the band by clips passing through the eyelets 16 of the reinforced portion of the band. Thus,
by taking hold of the depending portions 14a, 14D of the band 14 and drawing them downward alternately, the swab v17 may be Vversely-extending Serial No. 33,722.
caused to traverse the vertical extent of the window pane to be cleaned, the bent-in porJ tion 11 of the housing serving to hold the Y adjacent portion of the band inward relatively close to the pane so that the swab is pressed lirmly thereagainst.
In order to permit free and easy horizontaltraverse of the housing 10 along the topk of the sash so that the entire horizontal eX tent of the window maybe reached by the swab, the housing 10 is provided with trans small rollers 1S, 19 journalled therein adjacent its ends and inward of the rollers 12, 13.
The device thus constituted is adapted to be quickly and easily applied to the window sash in operative position, and by its use the window panes, particularly the upper' panes, may be quickly and effectively cleaned on the outer surfaces thereof without the operator having to reach out ofthe window at all, the two endportions let, 1&1) of the band extending for convenient actuation from a location within the window.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from Vthe spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and refer to the appended claim rather than tothe foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
, Iclaim A wiiidowclea`ning device comprising a housing substantially. U-shaped in cross section and constructed and arranged to fit over l the top of a window sash, the lower edge of the outer side of said housing being bent inward toward the window pane, transverse rollers mountedin said housing and adapted to 'engage the top of a window sash, longitudinal rollers mounted in said housing, a flexible band disposed within said housing,
the horizontal portion thereof resting on ysaid longitudinal rollers and vertical portions thereof depending inside and outside'. the window, respectively, the outside ver# tical portion passing under the windowsash and terminating inside the window, yand a swab detachablyf secured to the portion of y said band depending voutside the window.
IIn testimony whereof Ihave aflixed my,
signature.
HANLEY M. Davis.
