Description

April 9, 1929- v. SCHARSCHMIDT SAFETY WINDOW CLEANING DEVICE Filed Dec. 29, 1927 l atented Apr, 9, 1929.
,-UNIT-ED.STATES1 PATENT OFFICE.
VIRGINIA SCHARSCHMIDT, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
I SAFETY wrunowotnnnrne DEVICE.
Application filed December 29, 1927. Serial No. 243,368.
This invention relates to window cleaning devices and in particular to one adapted for cleaning the outer side of a window \Vltllout necessitating sit-ting out on the window sill or leaning out of the window.
A particulz ob ect of the invention 18 to provide a device which may be manipulated vertically of the window sash to clean the outside of the pane quickly and thoroughly.
A; still further object of the invention is to provide a" towel holding frame which is provided at its opposite edges with manipulating straps or tapes whereby the frame may be movedback and forth across the window to clean the same, the frame being of light construction and being particularly adapted to the purpose to which it is applied.
Astill further object of the invention is to provide a mop device which may be used to swab theoutside of the window pane and which is provided with an extended handle portion whereby the necessity of sitting outside the window is eliminated.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in struc-' ture and relation contemplated, a drawing depicting a preferred form has been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawing, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, ofwhich,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a part of a window showing the position my improved cleaning device would occupy in c0nnection with the lower sash, the tapes thereon being in position to be manipulated to cause movement of the window cleaning frame back and forth across the outer side of the pane. 1 p c Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the towel holding frame which forms the most important feature of my invention.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken through the cleaning device, the section being taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, and the cleaning towel being shown in position therein.
Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken through one edge of the holding frame adjacent one of the hooks or clips to show how the toweling is inserted under the clip and held in position across the bottom of theframe.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5
indicates a portion of the upper sash and 6 the lower sash of a window construction, the sashes holding the usual window panes 7, the cleaning of which on the outer side is carried on through the use of my improved window cleaning device.
It is well known that in the cleaning of windows on the outside surface, necessitates the person cleaning the window sitting out on the window sill and in many instances, the windows are at a dangerous height and housewives accidentally fall off the window ledge and are'injured, and with a view to cleaning the exterior side of the pane with out getting outside the window or sitting upon the window sill, I have provided a towel holding frame 8 which consists of a rectangular piece of sheet metal in strip form having its riveted together frame. overturned clips 10 which, at their upper extremities joining the edge of the frame 8, are bulged as at 12 to provide a. space in which the toweling may be imprisoned, as will be hereinafter explained. The frame 8 is provided with a center piece or brace made of the same material and indicated by the numeral 13, the same being turned over at its ends 14 and secured in any suitable manner, such for instance, as by riveting, to the ends 15 of the frame and disposed substantially midway between the sides thereof.
This center piece or brace 13 is also punched to provide clips 16 and the purpose of the clips 10 and 16 is to allow an absorbent towel 17 or wiping cloth to be pushed thereunder to be releasably held across what might be termed as the bottom of the frame. This is illustrated in Figure 3 wherein the ends overlap as at 9 and to form a rectangular toweling 17 has-been forced into the clips 10 and 16 and is held smooth towel surface is presented to the window pane surface to be cleaned.
In order to manipulate the frame vertically of the window, I have secured to the ends thereof, the wire bracket or handle 18 which may be suitably shaped to accommodate the ends 19 of tapes 20. It will be noted that these brackets or handles are rigidly secured to the ends 15 of the frame 8 and are disposed at right angles thereto so that when the frame is positioned outside of the window as shown in Figure 1, and the tapes are drawn over the top and under the bottom of the sash 6, the action thereunder so that a The frame is punched to provide of the tapes-n the wire bracket or handles 18 will be to force the frame 8 against the outside surface of the pane with the result that during the reciprocation of the frame vertically of the window, the toweling will thoroughly cleanse the outer surface of the pane as satisfactorily as" if pressure was applied by the arm of the individual cleaning the window. H l I V V M It isquite evident, therefore, that I have provided a towel or absorbent cloth holding frame which may be positioned exterior-1y of a wlndow and'through the 'mediumofsuitable'tape membersmay be manipulated vertically of the wmdow pane and exterior-1y thereof by a person standing in the'room,
thus eliminating any risk attendant in cleaning a window? from the outside.
It is evident, therefore, that I have pro-' videda devicevfor the cleaning of theextenor of a window from the 1nter1or of "the room, which-can be made in few parts, and
which will save time in the cleaning of the -win'dow due to the fact that the cleaning and polishing device may be manipulated I more ritp'idlydthan has been vpossible manuallyil While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. Itherefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the formof the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of tllQICOF- related parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, V, I
Having thusdescr bed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is z 1. A window cleaning device comprising a frame, a cloth stretched over said frame,
brackets onthe endsof said frame, a reinthe frame for holding thecloth in placeupon' the frame and tapes secured each at one end to a respective one of thebracketa'th'e other ends of the said tapes being free whereby they may be passed over the upper and lower edges ofwincowsash. I
A window cleaning devlce comprlsing a frame over whicha cloth is stretched,"
the frame comprising side and end members, corresponding edgeslof the sald members,
at one side of the frame, all occupying a common plane and constituting the edges over which the cloth is stretched, clip fingers extending from the opposite edges of the said members of the frame and having bends to receive and frictionally grip the margins of the'cloth inserted therein, and means upon the frame for the connection thereto of flexible tapes whereby the frame may be moved back and forth over the surface of a window pane. o In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
