UNITED STATES RAPHAEL ANGELO .'PILLA, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVAIA.
DRAWER STOP.
Application led July 13,
My invention relai es to drawer stops and more particularly to stops yadapted to prevent the accidental removal ot a drawer from :i cabinet. Drawers ot' type cabinets are oil-en accidentally pulled out too tar; thus dumping Athe contents ou the door and pieing he type. which causes a great deal o' work in iesorting.
rlhc principal object of my invention is to produce a device that will eliminate this regardless ot how carelessly the dran ers are handled.
A 'further object ot the invention is to produce this device oi simple and strong instruction which will be easily installed.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will bc described hereinafter, I attain in the 'following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is 'fragmentary plan view of a type cabinet section, shown partly in cross section, on which my invention has been installed,
Figure 2 a side view, ot the drawer shown in Figure l, drawn to a larger scale,
Figure 23 is a 'fragmentary trout view of he cabinet shown in Figure l, certain parts :eing brolren away,
liigure el is a cross sectional view o'l my device taken on line #l Ll of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a front view oit the device shown in Figure 11.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents :i section ott' a type cabinet, 7 the top plate ot same, 8 a drawer in which type is stored. The side rails of the drawer S contain `:grooves 9 which are deeper at the front of the drawer, as shown at 10, sloping outwardly 'lor a short distance shown at 11 and then tapering rearwardly to the full depth at the rear of the drawer, as illustrated at 12. 13 represents my device in its entirety which is installed in a .recess 14 et the partition 15 of the cabinet 6 with the trout ot the device flush with the inner surtace ot the partition. The device consists ol: metallic casing 16 having a cylindrical recess 17 in the approximate center oll the casing 16, terminating against Ahe rear wall ol' the casing in which a small aperture 18 is provided. Inserted in the recess 17 is a lock bolt 19 having a reduced rear portion 20, the end of which is threaded tor reception ot a nut 21, A coiled spring 22 encircles the reduced portion of the lock 1926. Serial No. 122,103.
Y ,p Y boit 19, spline' abutting the the ends oi" the i the loch' belt. 19, a depression I n is lormcd, the purpose ot which will be later explained.
lb'e upper `wall ot the casing lt; is provided r-fith a small aperture and thc walls ot' the recess 17 are provided with lar apertures 26; the apertures and 25 being in alignment. n catch 27, having a shoulder 2S 'formed by a reduced top portion 29, is inserted in the aperture and the upper aperture 26. A coiled spring 30 encircles the reduced portion 2 the ends ot which abut i'especti"cly against the inner side o the upper l ot the casing and the outer wall oi? the central a ier-ture. The .device is secured to tl' partition 15 by screws or the like being inserted through holes 31 ot the iront plate 32. The device is assembled in the following manner:
The catch 27 is passed upwardly through the two apertures 26 and the spring 30 placed on the reduced portion ot the catch which is then raise-d still further until the reduced. portion extends through the aperture 25 above the upper wall oi the casing and then riveted over or otherwise secured against return. The spring 22 is placed on the reduced portion 20 ot the lock bolt 19 which is then inserted in the recess 17 and the center o the reduced portion passed through the aper ture 1S. The nnt 21 is then threaded onto the reduced portion and the entire device ras tened into the recess 141 by means of screws or the like passing through the holes 31 and engaging the partition. The sides ot the drawers of the cabinet are grooved as .shown in Figures 1 and 2; the 'ront ot the drawer being grooved deep enough to admit the end of the lock bolt and then slope outwardly tor a short distance so that the lock bolt rides in the bottom ol the groove. The rear end of the groove sloping gradually to its full depth near the rear of the drawer at which point the lock bolt 19 is permitted to extend to its normal position, thus locking the drawer against accidental removal.
In case it is desired to remove the drawer, the lock bolts 19 are depressed by placing a thumb against the end of the bolt and turned until the catch 27 engages the grooved recess 24 which will retain the lock bolt in its withdrawn position. In Figure 3, the device is shown with the lock bolt both extended and withdrawn. Adjustment of the lock bolt is made by means of the nut 2l.
ll-.lhile have described my invention beingl applied to type cabinets and consisting of a particular form, it will be understood that it may be readil)v adapte(l to other purposes and that the various parte mayv be changed Without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence do not` limit myself to the precise construction set i'orth, but consider that l am at liberty to make Such changes and alterations as 'lairlv como wilhin the scopo of the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, nl: it l claim aS new and r(lenire lo Seizure h v liettei's Patent is l. A drawer stop including` :i casing; z. locl; bolt slidablyY positioned in said casino: ineens for rrmall)v holding Said bolt in el ended position; a catch positioned in said casing and adapted to normallyv abut against said bolt. said holt being adapt .d to said catch.
2. A drawer stop includingl a caeing having a cylindrical recess; a round-nosed locl; bolt? adapted to engage a groove in a -oiawver side rail` in said recess; a compre eion sprino engaging the inner wall of the easingI and shoulders formed on said locl; holt, to hold said lock bolt normallyv in an cx- 'tcnded position; and means ez'ztcnding through said casing and into said recess lo engage said bolt in a dill'erent position.
3. A. drawer Sto includingl a caeingjv having); a` cylindrical recess; a round-nosed lock bolt, adapted to engage a groove in a drawer side rail, in said reces; a compression spring', engaging the inner Wall oil the casing` and shoulders formed on said lock holt, to hold said lool: bolt. normali;T in an extended poeition: and Spring controlled incanf--z in said csi ing' adapled to engage said lool: bolt in ivitlidrawn position.
