INTERMEMBERING AND INT ERLOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, mi.
Application filed December 2, 1915. Serial No. 64,782.
(DEDICATED TO THE PUBLIC.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. BARGHAUSEN,
a citizen of the United States, and an em-' ployee of the Department of Agriculture of the said United States, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, (whose post-otiice address is Washington, D. C.,) have invented a new and useful Intermembering and Interlocking Device.
This application is made under the act of March 3, 1883, chapter 143 (22 Stat, 625), and the invention herein described and claimed may be used by the Governmentof the United States or any of its otiicers or employees incthe prosecution of work for the Government, or any person in the United States, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
My invention relates to a simple and inexpensive intermembering and interlocking device for sectional furniture, bookcases, or any other articles wherein it is necessary to bring two or more units accurately together and to fasten them securely.
Heretofore it has been the custom in many instances to intermember sectional furniture by fastening strips of wood on the bottom and top of the case. so as to form a recess, to intermember which, in many instances, caused poor construction and allowed dust to enter the top of the case.
I overcome these objections by the device illlustlrated in the accompanying drawing, in w no 1 Figure 1 is a detailed cross section showing the device in position;
Fig. 2 is the thumb bolt;
Fig. 3 is the intermembering pin known as the male part;
Fig. 4 shows the round plate known as the female part; and
Fig. 5 shows a round plate with threaded hole and known as lock plate.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A hole is bored through the bottom'of each end of the top case and each end of the top of the bottom case in such a manner that when one case is placed on top of the other these holes will be opposite. These holes are bored at equal distances from the front and ends of the cases. A plate, A, having a hole, 13, is securely fastened to the bottom of the top case directly over the hole in such case by means of screws through the holes, C. This plate is countersunk so as to be flush with the bottom of the case. On the top side of the bottom rail inside of the top case, directly over the hole bored therein, is secured, by means of screws through the holes, F, a lock plate, D, having a threaded opening, E. This plate is likewise countersunk so as to be flush with the case. To the top of the bottom case and directly over the hole therein is placed a plate, G, having a tapered pin. H. with an opening, I, through the same. This plate, (i. is coun tersunk in the case and is fastened thereto by screws through the holes, J. The top case is placed upon the bottom case with the pin. H. projecting through the opening. B. A thumb bolt. K. is then passed up through the top of the bottom case from the inside, through the plate, G. through the top case and securely screwed into the opening. E. of the plate. D. The tapered pin. H, having the opening. I, therein constitutes what have hereinbefore referred to as the male part of the device. and the plate. A. having an aperture, B. therein, is the female part thereof. The pin, H, is secured to the lower case by means of the plate, G. and is fitted,
when in operative position. into the open ing. B. The pin, H, when fitted into said opening, B. serves the purpose of preventing lateral shifting of the sectional units. On sectional files, by eliminating the threaded lock plate, 1'). and inserting a threaded bolt through the hole in the upper case. the openings. B and I, and the hole in the lower case. and having such threaded bolt engage a winged nut in lieu of the thumb bolt, K, a plerfect lock of units may be obtained.
aving thus described my invention, I claim:
An intermembering and interlocking device comprising, in combination, a lock plate I with threaded opening adapted to be placed on the inside of an upper case. a plate with a larger opening adapted to be placed underneath said lock plate on the outside of said case, a plate, having a tapered hollow pin, adapted te be placed on top of the out- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaside of a bottom case,- said pin projecting ture in presence of two subscribing witthreugh theplate, on the bottom f-the 11pnesses.
per case forpreventing lateral shifting of JOHN F. BARGHAUSEN.
1;, the 'said'cases, and athumb bolt extending Witnesses:
through allx'of said plates-andfastening in JAMES E. JONES, said lock plate, substantially as described. HARRY GODING.
