K. A. BRAUNING LOCK CASING Filed July 29, 1924 A gwmmto@ sa, HMM- Patented Jan. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL A. BRAUNING, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE 6c TO\VNE MANUFACTURING- COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK CASING.
Application filed July 29,
To @ZZ 'whom it may concern.'
Bc it known that I, KARL A. BRAUNING, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iiock Casings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. n
This invention relates to improvements in lock casings,-one object of the invention bcing to provide simple and eicient means` for removably securing the cover plate ol the casing in place.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure l is a face view showing the cover plate locked to the casing proper.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the cover plate unlocked, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view.
The main portion of the casing is shown at 1 and the cover plate at 2. One end wall of the casing is provided with a groove 3 into which one end of the cover plate enters and at its other end, said cover plate rests upon a shoulder 4 of the opposite end wall of the casing.
An intermediate portion of the cover plate is formed with a depression whereby a seat 5 is provided for the flanged portion 6 of a key plug 7.
The portion 8 of the cover' plate is preferably in a different plane from that of the portion 9 and to the portion 8 of said cover plate, a locking lever l0 is pivotally attached. The free end of this locking lever is provided with a tongue 11 (preferably slightly curved) and this tongue enters an arcuate notch or groove l2 in the adjacent end wall of the casing to lock the cover plate in place. In order to hold the locking lever against displacement when in 1924. Serial No. 728,916.
locking position, said lever is formed with a recess 13 into which a protuberance 14; on the cover plate enters.
In order that there shall be no interference to ready access for a key to be inserted into the key plug, the locking lever is provided with a hole l5 which becomes disposed over the key plug when the lever is in locking position and in order that the lever may have a hole of suflicient size, that portion of the lever in which the hole isformed, is preferably somewhat enlarged.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is :v
l. The combination with the body portion of a lock casing having a cover plate receiving portion at one end and a groove and a seat at the other end, of a cover plate adapted at one end to engage said receiving portion at one end of the casing and rest upon the shoulder at the other end of the latter, said cover plate having a seat to receive a lock part, and a lever pivoted at one end and adapted to extend past said last-mentioned seat and having an opening normally over the'latter, the free end of the pivoted lever adapted to enter the groove in one end of the casing.
2. The combination wit-h the body portion of a lock casing having a groove in one end wall and a notch in the other end wall, said last mentioned end wall also having a shoulder, of a cover plate adapted at one end to enter the groove in one end wall andto rest at its other end against the shoulder of the other end wall, said cover plate having a depressed. seat for a key plug, and a locking lever pivoted to the cover plate and having a hole to be disposed over the key plug seat when said locking lever is in locked position, the free end of said locking lever adapted to engage in the notch in the adjacent end wall of the casing.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
KARL A. BRAUNING.
