IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.

I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,624., dated April 27, 1875; application filed January 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHAUNGEY H. CASTLE, of Quincy, county of Adams, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to stoves, and especially to that class which is constructed with sheetiron bodies and provided with an interior lining to prevent undue action of the heat upon the exterior body or case. Great inconvenience has heretofore existed in the construction and repair of the interior lining of stoves of this nature, by reason of the difficulty experienced in manipulating the same, it being impracticable for the workman to proceed intelligently while the exterior covering is in place, as it conceals the parts so that they cannot readily be seen or operated upon. It has been customary in constructing the stove, to first fit the linings and exterior body into the back, and then fasten the front in place, which occasions great loss of time and much uncertainty in fastening the parts together, while in repairing, the exterior body or the front has been wholly or in part removed.

The object of the invention is to obviate the difiiculty and annoyance experienced in through an opening in the end or an opening in the body, or otherwise.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention; and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the same.

A is the lining formed into convenient plates, as shown, and provided on the outside, near their upper corners, with the ears .6, through which pass the screws or bolts B provided near their interior ends with the nuts D. This arrangement serves to sustain and keep the upper part of the plate in position. The lower edge of the plate is provided with the flanges F, which fit outside of the upper edge of the bed-plate, a flange, F, on which fits over the edge of the plate, as shown. This arrangement serves to retain in position the lower part of the plate A. But any other convenient form or means of attachment or fastening, of any nature, may be used. To remove the plate A, or any one thereof, it is only necessary to take off the nuts D, withdraw the bolts 0, bend the plate toward the center of the stove, when it may be taken out through any orifice of suitable size in the top or ends of the stove-barrel. The sideplates being removed, or one of them, to remove the bed-plate it is only necessary to raise and withdraw it. H is the outside body of the stove, which, in the present instance, is hinged and provided with the bolt I and socket K, so that it may be carried over, thus exposing the whole of the Jining, or restored to its place and locked at pleasure.

By this arrangement the outside body may be attached before the lining is inserted, or the lining, when secured as above described, removed without inconvenience. In lieu thereof, any other arrangement which effects a likeresult maybe employed. Thus a section of the back of the stove may be constructed to slide or fold, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the lining may be inserted after the outside body has been attached or readily removed and repaired when out of order.

I do not allege or claim that my invention is novel in its application to stoves of every description which have a sheet-metal body, but only to that class which are made with a horizontal body of sheet metal, and with heads of cast metal, and the linings of which are so arranged that the products of combustion pass around and under them before escaping, the said class being commonly known as Tod stoves.
