COMPACT CASE.

rhis invention relates to articles pertaining to the toilet, particularly for womens use, and has as onel of its objects to provide an artistic case in which the common requisites for tinting and heightening natural the case being in itself of pleasing proportions, well adapted to become an indispensable adjunct to the miscellanies of the usual hand bag.

A further feature is in the provision of an extremely simple case, composedV of merely two parts, hinged at one edgek and united by integral clips at the opposite edge, the metal mirror and compact employed being held securely without the use of auxiliary fastenings.

Another aim is to produce a'compact refill designed for ready removal and substitution in a. novel and practical manner.

These and other features of structural importance, which will become apparent as the description progresses, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting a material part .of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, shownv in an open position with mirror and compact body in place.

Figure 2 is a partial front edge, partial transverse sectional view taken on the center line of a completely filled case in closed position.

As clearly shown in the drawing the case is composed of two exactly equal and uniform members, which to identify may be considered as cup and lid and designated respectively, in a general way by the numerals 5 and 6.

These elements consist of circular plates 7 and 8 which are substantially flat, although in practice it is preferable they be very slightly crowning or convex, which condition is shown considerably exaggerated for a reason that will later appear.

By die and spinning methods employed in the construction of these elements the peripheral edges of the plates are shaped to present beads 9 and 1() having the appearance o right angled flanges on their outer surfaces. their inner surfaces having well defined but minute interior annular recesses 11 and 12.

flanges 9 and 10 are flaring walls 13 and 1li, arcuately curved and shaped at their mutually contacting edges to present'straight meeting faces 15 and 16 forming a tig joint when the lid is closed upon the cup.

A curled hinge member 17 is formed at one point on the wall 14 and a pair of like members 18 are formed on the wall 13 of the lid element, these members being' connected by ahinge pin in the usual way.

Onthe edge of the lid wall 18, at a point ht y directly Opposite the hinge member 17., is a` clip 19 adapted to engage a depression`20 in the rim 14 of the cup, causing the lid t0 be retained on the cup until separated by the exertion of moderate force.

To facilitate separation an outstanding lug or finger grip 21 is formed on the edge 15 of the lid, to one side of the clip 19, and correspondingly, a similar lug 22 reaches outwardly from the edge 16 of the cup, at the opposite side of the catch element 20, thus spacing the lugs for convenience in opening the case.

A thin metallic mirror 23, having a highly polished surface and shaped to conform with the recess 11, is initially curved slightly concavo-conv-eX to permit its edge-to enter the recess and then forcibly spring backward against the plate 7 where it is held fast in a substantially fiat position, by reason dof its edge engagement, its face being slightly coni cave, but to such lsmall extent as to be imperceptible.

A compact body 24E, having a raised cushion shaped outer surface and rounded upper edge, is provided with a relatively hard disclilre bottom 25, as `thin metal or other yieldable but noncompressible material, suited to be engaged in the cup recess 12, in a manner similar to the fitting ofthe mirror.

As it is desirable to remove the compact body when worn or if for other reasons it is required to substitute another', a notch 26 is cut in one edge, under which any convenient sharp pointed implement may be entered and used as a lever to raise and release the body.

The space between the face of the mirror and compact body is utilized to contain a pad 27, the same being provided with a tape 28 for convenience in using.

It is to be seen that a very complete compact case has been described, simple in construction, neat in appearance and easy to operate; it is further to be noted that no bezel or other clan'iping devices `are employed to retain the parts in operative position and that the compact body can be removed and replaced at will.

From the foregoing it Will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made Without conflicting with the scope of the appended claims. y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A compact case comprising a cup, a lid hing-ed thereto, said lid having an annular recess means to secure the lid to the cup, a mirror permanently fastened in the recess of said lid, said fastening means being integral, a notched compact body removably engaged in said cup, and means to release said compact body therefrom.

A compact case comprising a pair of hinged elements having substantially flat sides and rusto-conical flaring edges, there being internal annular recesses in said edges adjacent the sides, a compact body having a solid base to enter one or' the annula recesses, said body and base containing a notch in the edge, and a flexible metalmirror ixedly engaged in the other recess.

3. A compact case con'iprising two like sheet metal concavo-conveii elements hingedly united at their edges, one of said ele` ment-s having a spring clip to engage the other element, means on both elements to facilitate opening', the edges of the elements meeting to form a close joint, an internal annular recess formed in the Walls of both elements, a metallic mirror permanently set in the recess or' one member, and a compact body removably engaged in the recess of the other member said body having a notch extending into its periphery.

A compact case comprising a body composed ol tivo uniform elements having sharp meeting edges hingedly engaged and provided vvith integral means for securing a mirror and compact body in the respective elements.

5. A compact body comprising a body composed of two like concave-convex sides having integrally formed hinged and clip elements respectively, and inreaching beads integral in each side to secure articles snapped past said beads.

6. A compact case comprising tivo like concavo convex shells hingedly connected at their edge-s, said shells having substantially fiat sides and lrusto-conical flowing edges meeting in a thin edge.

7. A compact case comprising tivo lile concavo convex shells, hingedly connected at their edges, said shells having substantially raised arcuate sides and rrusto-conical lion'- ing edges meeting' in a thin edge.

8. A compact case comprising two like concavo convex shells, hingedly connected at their edges, said shells having substantially flat sides and frusto-conieal flowing edges meeting in a thin edge, said shells being turther provided with internal annular receiving recesses adapted to receive a mirror and a. compact body.
