This invention relates to improvements in holders for supporting sickles, scythes, and the like, in order that they may be con` veniently ground.

It can be appreciated from the relation of parts illustratedlin Figure 1 of the drawing,

kthat it is a diiicult operation to evenly and yaccurately grind the end blades 1l' of the S5 sickle A, and especially is it diliicult for a single individual to do so, since the extreme length of the sickle forms a leverage When the end blades are to be 'sharpened which provides a Weight that the operator cannot support when the end blades at either end of-the sickle are to be sharpened.4 AItis therefore a purposeof they invention to provide the holder B, which detachably engages between any of the bladesV of `the sickle holder, and it extends to the opposite side of the grindstone from the major length of the sickle, so that the operator may grasp the holder-with-the one handand the sickle withk grindstone as a fulerum point, to bear evenly upon the blade to be sharpened.

rlhe improved holder B preferably comprises an elongated body portion 25, whichmay be of wood, metal, or any preferred rigid material. At one end thereof the same is provided with a. handle structure 2G, comprising the U-shaped body portion 2i' having a recess 2S therein adapted to receive the outer end of the body portion 25 of the holder B, and be riveted therein as by rivets 29. The structure 2G furthermore' includes the reduced hand grasp extending outwardly axially at the ends of the body 25.

The holder body 25 at the opposite end from the handle structure 2G, is provided with a slot oa way 4.() extending inwardly from the end edge 41, and parallel with the axis of the body 25. This way 4() subdivides the outer end of the holder B into the shanks 42 and 43 which are very durable and strong enough to aid in the support of the sickle. The way is formed of a width determined by the parallel edges and 4G of the shanks 42 and 43, and the way 40 for the purposes of description may be considered as ending at an edge 47 of the body 25, which extends at right angles from the edge 45 of the shank 42. At the inner end of the way or slot 4() a recess or pocket 4S is formed in the inner end of the slot 40 at a corner thereof, extending for a dist-ance into the body 25 beyond the edge 47 and extending into the shank portion 48 beyond the slot facing edge 46 thereof. This pocket 48 therefore provides a portion 5,0 which extends upwardly into the body 25 beyond the edge 47 and provides a portion 55 which extends into the. shank 43 beyond the edge 46, and in the latter instance providing a shoulder 54 which aids in the support of the sickle as will be subsequently described.

Referring to the cooperative attachment of the holder B upon the sickle A, the slot or way 40 is of sutl'icient width that the same may receive the sickle bar 12 and the body portion of the sickle plate l() at its least width, between the blades or knives 11. After the holder has been slipped onto the sickle between the proper blades ll, and the sickle moved tothe end of the way 40 the holder is then moved laterally to accommodate the sickle bar 12 in the pocket 48, and in thus moving the holder it is locked, so to speak, upon the sickle bar, and the sickle bar l2 is accommodated in the portion 50 of the recess 4S bearing against the u 3 )er edO'e of' tv T3 D.

said pocket 4S, and the sickle bears against the shoulder 54 of the holder shank 43, as is illustrated in Figures l and 5 of the drawing. A blade ll, as is illustrated in Figure l of the drawing, bears against the shank 42. and in this position the holder B is disposed in an obtuse angular relation with respect to the sickle A, and at the short end of the sickle, and extends beyond this end of the sickle to provide a convenient leverage for balancing the lsickle upon the sharpening element 18.

From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that a novel type of holder for sickles has been provided, which may be detachably associated in a convenient manner at either end of the sickle, to provide an extension for the sickle, by which the same may be balanced during sharpening of the end blades or knives, so that the said blades may be evenly sharpened and ground.

Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claims.

I claim:

l. In a holder of the cla-ss described a body portion having a way extending inwardly from an end thereof to subdivide said end into a pair of Shanks at opposite sides of the way, said body portion having a reduced recess contiguous with the way extending upwardly intothe body portion beyond the inneredge of the way and also laterally into one of said shanks to provide a shoulder on said shank facing said recess.

2. As an article of manufacture a sickle holder comprising a rigid flat elongated body portion having` a way formed inwardly of an end edge subdividing said handle into a pair of sickle engaging shanks, said way at the inner end thereof having a laterally extending recess communicating therewith and extending into one of said shanks to provide a shoulder facing in a direction opposite to the outlet of the way.

As an article of manufacture a sickle holder comprising a rigid elongated body portion having a way formed inwardly of an end edge subdividing said handle into a pair of .sickle engaging shanks, said way at the inner end thereof having a laterally extending recess communicating therewith and extending into one of said shanks to providel a shoulder facing in a direction opposite to the outlet of the way, said way also extending upwardly into the body portion beyond the end edge of said way.
