BRAIDER ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.

This invention resides in the provision of a simple and inexpensive device which is adapted to be attached to a sewing machine and which operates to hold braid, embroidery thread, ribbon or the like, in position to be sewed onto a piece of cloth in order that embroidery and like4 effects may be produced in fanciful forms and figures.

r he attachment of the invention comprises small guide and holder which is const-ructed so that it may be readily fitted upon the presser footof a sewing machine and will permit of the feeding of embroidery thread or the like in such manner that the said thread may be stitched or sewed onto a piece of cloth in a rapid and effective manner to produce various fanciful designs and iig, ures simulating embroidery work.

Another object` of theinvention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is formed of a single piece of sheet metal and bent to form an effect-ive clamp and a guiding and holding means, which latter will permit of a positioning and feeding of embroidery thread or the like without any possibility of entanglement or jamming of the thread or in anyway interrupting the continuous operation of sewing the thread or the like on a piece of cloth.

lVith the above mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

The embodiment of this invention shown in the accompanying drawing is made of a single piece of thin resilient metal comprisn ingI a substantially rectangular body portion l of a width equal to that of the presser foot 2 of a sewing machine A, but part of which'latter is shown. This body port-ion 1s provided alongv one edge with a downwardly extending flange or 4projection 3 which is adapted to extend along one side or edge 4L of the presser foot and on its lower end carries a laterally extended clamping portion 5 adapted to engage the under sine of the presser foot. This portion 5 converges towards the center of the body l so that it is forced away from the body l when slipped on the presser foot and will thereby clamp against the presser foot to hold the attachment in place. Extending across the body portion l, transversely thereof, is a guide groove 6 for the embroidery thread 7. This groove is formed bydepressing the metal of the body l and'defines a rib 8 which lies in the slot of the presser foot between the extremities of said presser foot so as to assist in holding the attachment in place. To yieldingly hold the thread 7 in the groove, a spring retaining 'tongue 9 is eX- tended from one end of the plate 1 and bent back to lie o-ver the top of the plate across the groove 6. The free end of said tongue 9, being up-turned as at l0 to permit of slipping of the cord sidewise into the groove, where it is slidably held therein by said tongue.

The attachment is put on the presser foot 1n such manner that the inner edge thereof is spaced from the inner end of the slot or bifurcationin the presser foot and therefore does not interfere with the free movement of the needle 11 through the bifurcation of the presser foot. With the thread in place, on the placing of the piece of cloth as shown at B, beneath the presser foot and operating the machine in the ordinary manner, the machine will stitch ,along the center of and through the en'rbroidery thread and sew it to the cloth as shown at C, Fig. 4. By moving the cloth during this operation7 various forms or designs may be made, the cord 7 being fed through and guided by the attachment of the invention. With this simple and inexpensive attachment no particular skill is required vto make various fanciful embroidery figures or to apply braid to material, it vbeing possible' to use ribbon or braid instead otl the embroidery thread. is such as to' insure a simple and reliable operation in sewing thread or tape onto cloth,` there being no jamming of the thread or other interfering with the operation of the machine. The guide groove 6 in being formed so as to delinea rib 8 not only serves as an'effective means for guiding and holdingqthe thread in proper positionto be sewed in place, but due' to the engagement of the ribS inthe space between the extremities of U the presser foot, further assists in holding theattachment firmly in place on the presser` foot. I claim:

A braider attachment for sewing machines comprising a thin metal body portion adapted to be placed on top` of the presser foot of a sewing machine and having. a groove extending across the upper `side thereof, which groove defines a ribon the under side of the body, which rib is adapted to engage in the bifurcation provided between the extremities of the presser foot, a

downwardly extending flange on one edge of the body portion adapted to engage one side of the presser foot, a laterally extending clamping jaw at thelower end `of the iange yieldingly engaging the lower side of the presser foot and a narrow spring tongue formed integral with the body portion on the end thereof opposite that carrying the flange, which tongue isf bent downward to lie on top of the body portion and extends across said groove.
