Description

Oct. 29, 1957 L. BONO 2,811,124
CLOTH PRESSING DEVICE FOR SEWING MACHINES Filed Aug. 4, 1954 INVENTOR. q 1 BOA/0 United States Patent CLOTH PRESSING DEVICE FOR SEWING MACHINES Luigi Bono, Pavia, Italy, assignor to Vittorio N ecchi Societa per Azioni, Pavia, Italy Application August 4, 1954, Serial No. 447,817 Claims priority, application Italy April 10, 1954 1 Claim. (Cl. 112-235) The present invention relates to a special cloth pressing device for sewing machines suited for two-needle sewing.
As is known, the common cloth pressing device is the member that under the action of a spring holds the work pressed against the needle plate and against the toothed transport grip. Zigzag-sewing machines, in which the needle bar besides displacing with reciprocating vertical movement also displaces laterally with adjustable amplitude, may be also provided for sewing with two needles. In fact, with the two needles close and parallel to each other in a plane parallel to the advancement of the work it is possible to obtain, by suitable actuation of the controls for needle displacing and for adjusting the amplitude of the zigzag, a vast range of embroidery designs specially if the two needles are threaded with yarns of different colours.
It is known that the cloth pressing devices provided for zigzag sewing with one needle are equipped, in the plane that comes in contact with the work, with a slot necessary to contain the maximum amplitude of lateral displacement of the needle. equipment said slot should be wider to contain the displacement of two combined needles parallel to the direction of transport. This wider aperture is useful for a better visibility of the seam but has on the other hand the inconvenience that during the extraction of the needles from the cloth, specially if the latter is thin, the needles drag the cloth along with their movement with the consequence of bad sewing with skipped stitches.
To obviate these inconveniences it is proposed to form a cloth pressing device in accordance with the present invention, with the usual shape of conventional devices of the kind described but having a wider slot provided with a thin traverse in suitable position, adapted to prevent the needles from dragging the cloth out of said slot and permitting at the same time good visibility of the seam.
Evidently for double-needle Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the device connected 5 with the pressing bar.
Fig. 2 is a partial section of the device along the vertical plane of section line II-II of Fig. 1.
The device indicated at P is composed of the stem 1 and of the forked sole 2, connected with each other by means of the pin 3; the stem 1 is connected with the pressing bar 4 that supports it by means of the screw 4'.
On the sole there is provided a slot 5 divided by a thin traverse 6 arranged orthogonal to the direction of transport in the lower part of the machine in such a way that during sewing it is in contact with the cloth.
The two needles 7 fixed to the needle bar 8 by means of the clamp 8, which are arranged in a plane parallel to the direction of advancement of the work, move during zigzag sewing in the corresponding portions of the slot 5 confined by the traverse 6.
Hence, as already said, the traverse prevents the needles during extraction from the cloth, from dragging the cloth along with them out of the slot, thus avoiding a skipping of stitches.
Moreover, said traverse is so thin as to permit good visibility of the seam through the slot 5.
I claim:
A presser foot for sewing machines provided with a needle-bar carrying two needles arranged in a plane parallel to the cloth-feed direction and performing zigzag sewing, comprising a presser body having an aperture of substantial width for allowing zigzag sewing and a substantial length for providing clearance for said two needles, a transverse bar mounted upon said presser body at right angles to the cloth-feed direction dividing said aperture into two parts, in each of which parts a needle is operative, said transverse bar throughout its length being flush with the bottom surface of the presser-foot whereby said transverse bar is pressed on the fabric.
