The present invention relates to pipe wrenches and aims to provide a device which is capable of being easily and quickly adjusted to fit different sized pipes. The structure aims to do away with the usual adjusting nut, so that the device is practically self-adjusting since it may be adjusted with one hand and this feature is very important in certain operations, particularly in very close quarters.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, compact and convenient, not likely to easily become out of order, and well adapted, otherwise, to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other obj-ects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and .arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a wrench embodying the features of my invention Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken therethrough, substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1,

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sliding tenons forming a part of a wrench structure. 7
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the numeral 5 designates a shank the lower end of which merges into a handle 6. The upper end of the shank 5 merges into a head 7, a portion of which projects laterally. A fixed jaw 8 has lugs 9 depending therefrom and a pin 10 also depending therefrom. The shank 5 is provided on its opposite faces with a pair of dove-tailed mortises 11 for slidably receiving tenons 12 from which project pins 14 and 15, the former at the upper end thereof and the latter at the lower end thereof.
The lugs 9 are received in the upper ends of these mortises 11 .and are fixed in place by suitable fastening elements such as 1926. Serial No. 119,342.
screws 16. The pin 10 is received in a suitable recess provided in the offset portion of the head 7. A movable jaw 17 is provided with a shank 18. A substantially U-shaped frame 20 has its bight portion provided with teeth 21 for engaging teeth 22 pro v ded on the outer edge of the shank 5. The pins 15 pierce arcuate slots 23 provided in the frame 20. Arms 24; rise from the frame 2Q immediately above the portions provided with the slots 23 and merge into a U-shaped lateral extension 25 which is provided with arcuate slots 26 adjacent its bight portion.
The shank 18 extends between the terminals of the frame 20 and is pivoted thereto .as is indlcated at 27. This shank also extends between the U-shaped lateral extension 25 and has'pins 28 which pierce slots 26. A leaf spring 29 is attached as at 30 to the bight portion of the U-shaped lateral extension 25, and bears against the outer edge of the shank 18 to hold the inner edge thereof in abutment with the offset portion of the head 7, and the fixed j aw 8. A bowed spring 31 is fixed as at 32 between the sides of the U-shaped lateral extension 25 and the end thereof bears against the inner edge of the lower extremity of the shank 18, while the intermediate portion bears against the inner edge of the shank 5, thereby normally holding the parts of the wrench in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is, holding the frame so that the bight portion of the frame 20 is in engagement with the teeth 22.
It will be apparent, however, that this I frame 27, as shown in Fig. 1, may be pressed to the right to disengage the bight portions thereof from the teeth 22 so that the movable jaw may be moved toward or away from the fixed jaw. When the bight portion of the frame 20 is out of engagement with the teeth 22, it will be seen that the spring 29 tends to maintain the movable jaw 17 over the fixed jaw 18 that is, hold the inner edge of the shank 18 in abutment with the head 7. The frame 20, therefore, swings on the pins it to pierce suitable openings in the arms 2 1 at the upper ends thereof.
It is thought that the construction, operation and advantages and utility of this invention will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. It will be seen that the invention is capable of quick and easy operation, so that in fact-,;
the wrench may he held in one hand and with theth'umb or any finger the movable jaw may be moved in respect to the fixed jaw so as to adjust the wrench to-fit different sized pipes or the like. Thus the device is capable of being used in very close quarters.
The device is very simple in its construction, yet will prove strong and durable, although it may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed n detail merely by way'of example, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that numerous changes in the details of construc tion, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
'Having tlius'described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A wrench of the class described including, in combination, a shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, one edge of the shank being provided with teeth, a U-shaped frame having its bight portion provided with teeth for cooperation with the aforementioned teeth, said shank being provided with dovetailed mortises, dove-tailed tenons slidable iii-said mortises, means for pivoting the frame to the tenons, a movable jaw having a shank pivoted to the frame, and springs associated with the last mentioned shank.

A wrench of the class described including in combination, a shank having on opposite sides dove-tailed mortises extending lon itudinally thereof, and having teeth proje'cting from one end thereof a fixed jaw on said shank, a pair of tenons slidable in the mortises, a lower and an upper pin projecting from each tenon, a. Ushaped frame having its bight portion provided with inner projecting teeth for association with the teeth projecting from one edge of the shank, arms rising from the sides of the Ushaped frame and engaged pivotally with the upper pins of the tenons, the U-shaped frame being provided with arcuate slots for receiving the lower pins of the tenons, a lateral U-shaped extension merging from the upper end of the arms, a second shank projecting through the lateral U-shaped extension, and pivoted between the extremities of the U- shaped frame, a movable jaw fixed on the last mentioned shank, a pin and slot connection between the intermediate portion of the last mentioned shank and the sides of the lateral U-shaped extension.

A wrench of the class described including in combination, a shank having on opposite sides dove-tailed mortises extending longitudinally thereof, and having teeth projecting from one end thereof a fixed jaw on said shank, a pair of tenons slidable in the mortises, a lower and an upper pin projecting from each tenon, a U-shaped f-ame having its bight portion provided with inner projecting teeth for association with the teeth projecting from one edge of the shank, arms rising from the sides of the U-shaped frame and engaged pivotally with the upper pins of the tenons, the U- shaped frame being provided with arcuate slots for receiving the lower pins of the tenons, a lateral U-shaped extension merging from the upper end of the arms, a second shank projecting through the lateral U- shaped extension, and pivoted between the extremities of the U-shaped frame, a movable jaw fixed on the last mentioned shank, a pin and slot connection between the intermediate portion ofthe last mentioned shank and the sides of the lateral U-shaped extension, a bowed spring having one end mounted between the sides of the lateral U-shaped extension and its other extremity bearing against the inneredge of the last mentioned shank, while its intermediate portion bears against the other edge of the first mentioned shank.
5. A wrench of the class described including in combination, a shank having on opposite sides dove-tailed mortises extending longitudinally thereof, and having teeth projecting from one end thereof a fixed jaw on said shank, a pair of tenons slidable in the mortises, a lower and an upper pin projecting from each tenon, a U-shaped frame having its bightportion provided with inner projecting teeth for association with the teeth projecting from one edge of the shank, arms rising from the sides of tension, a bowed spring having one end mounted between the sides of the lateral U-shaped extension and its other extremity bearing against the inner edge of the last mentioned shank, while its intermediate portion bears against the other side of the first mentioned shank, a leaf spring fixed to the bight of the U-shaped lateral extension and having its free end bearing against the outer edge of the shank of the movable jaw.
