Application filed October 1924, Serial No. 746,853. Renewed July "30,1926."
This invention relates to improvements in mops, and more particularly to the construction'of the mop head and mopping element thereof. 7 i
:An important object of the invention is I p v band,'as indrcatedat 19. This folding forms to provide a device of this character free from fastening elements upon its outer surface by means of which the mopping element proper is attached to the head which will engage against furniture, base-boarding or the like to scratch the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very readily removed from the holder thereof and which when removed is in the form of a substantially flat band which may be washed and subsequently wrung by passing the same through a wringer of the ordinary construction.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very readily and cheaply produced and which will prove eflicient and durablein service.
These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mop head and mopping element constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the fastener of the mopping portion showing the manner of applying the same; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the retaining pins.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a mop head of any vided upon its upper surface with means, as at 11, wherebyit may be attached to a mop handle 12. The head is provided in its sides with a continuous groove 13 of greatest depth at the center thereof, and within this groove at the base thereof are mounted an eschutcheon pin 14 and holding pins 15 extending outwardly from the head for a purpose presently to appear.
The numeral 16 designates a mopping element comprising a plurality of strands 17 arranged side by side and having applied desired conformation, and proto one side thereof a band of fabric 18.
The ends of this band are folded about the end strands 17 and the band is then folded centrally. and the longitudinal edges thereof stitchedtogetherthrough the strands and.
an enlarged portion which is restricted by the stitching 19 to form a head 20 having the mopping strands 17 depending therefrom, which head is adapted to be received within the groove 13 of the mop head 10. Prior to the folding of the band, an eyelet or female member 21 of that type of fastener generally termed glove fastener is applie to the band at that portion thereof which forms the inner face of the head so that the outer face of the eyelet is covered by the band 18 in the completed structure and protected by not only the band 18 but the thickness of the strands 17. At the opposite end I after the head is completed, a male fastener 22 is applied through the head, this male fastener being of the type having in its inner face a socket 23.. This socket is adapted to receive the escutcheon pin lt.
In applying the band to the head, the band which is made of sufficient length to pass about the head within the groove 13 is first applied thereto by placing the male fastener upon the escutcheon pin with the escutcheon pin extending into its socket 23. The band is then stretched about the head 10 within the groove so that the head 20 thereof lies within such groove and the female fastener applied to the male fastener. Attention is directed'to the fact that when so applied the fasteners are completely protected and have no parts exposed about the mopping portion which may engage articles to disfigure the same. The pins 15 are simply provided to assist the escutcheon pin it in insuring against motion of the head 20 in the groove 13, the ends thereof being sharpened and engaging in said head, but the pins being of insufficient length to pass through such head even when compressed.
It will be obvious that a mopping element such as described may be applied to a head of any desired shape, the particular form illustrated being, however, preferred. Many changes being possible in the construction of the device as hereinbefore set forth without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. The combination with a mop head having formed therein a groove, of a mopping element having an enlarged band adapted to be positioned in said groove, a male fastener carried by one end of said band, a female fastener carried by the other end of said band, said male fastener having a socket and means upon the head at the base of the groove for entering the socket of the 7 male fastener.
2. The combination with a mop head havmg formed therein a groove, of a mopping element having an enlarged band adapted to be positioned in said groove, a male fastener carried by one end of said band, a female fastener carried by the other end of said band, said male fastener having a socket, and means upon the head at the base of the groove for entering the socket of the male fastener, said mop head having tangs adapted to engage in the head of said mopping element. when in positionv in said grooves and of insufficient length to pass through the head of such mopping element.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature.
' PHOEBE M. ROCHE.
