FILE HOLDER.
Application file i November 2?, 1925. Serial No. 71,660.
means whereby the file may be flexed out wardly or inwardly for use on a'concaved or convexed surface, thereby allowing the maximum cutting efliciency and the file to conform-to the curvature of the surface-being filed. r
A further object is to provide a' flexible file holding frame comprising a U -'shaped member having handle members, andto arms of which U-shaped member is pivotally connected, preferably loosely, the-fiends of a flexible bar, to which is detachably 'con-= nected a flexible file, and toprovide an ,adjusting' screw carried, by the] frame and co operating with theflexible barand forming means whereby the bar may be flexed outwardly or inwardly and held in adjusted po sitions. I i
A further object is to provide the upper side of the flexible bar with an apertured plate in which'th'e lower end of the adjusting screw is pivotally mounted, thereby allowing free movement of the flexible bar, and at the same time allowing rotation of the adjusting screw.
A further object is to provide the ends of the flexiblebar with registering spaced eyes between which the arms of the frame are disposed and pins extending transversely through the eyes and the arms and loosely mounted in the eyes, thereby allowing freedom of movement of the flexible bar inwardly and outwardly during adjustment thereof.
With the aboveand other objects in View the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed,'it being understood. that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the file holder showing the file inwardly flexed in dotted lines.
holder.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Flgure 1.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the file Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional I view taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
Referringto the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a U-shaped frame,-the arms 2 of which extend downwardly and are preferably provided with enlargement-s 3 through which transversely disposed pins 4 extend. The enlargement 3, at one end of the frame, is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly extendin arm 5 which terminates in a handle member 6, which is adapted to be grasped by one hand of the operator during the manipulation of the device, and .at which time the other hand of the operator is preferably placed on the handle member 7 adjacent the forward end of the frame so that the operator can apply pressure on the device during a filing operation, par icularly when filing concave and convex surfaces. \Vhere a concave and convex surface is filed with a conventional form of file, the work is laborious, and to a great degree inaccurate, and at the same time there is not a smooth cutting by the file. the above difliculty a flexible bar 8 is provided which may be flexed inwardly or outwardly according to whether a concave or convex surface is being filed. ;-The ends of the bar 8 are provided with spaced eyes 9, through which the pins at loosely extend.
To obviate 17, therefore it will be seen that the oper ator may adjust vthe bow of the flexible plate 8 by rotating the adjusting screw 14.,
and the loose connection of the pins 4 and eyes 9 will allow said adjustment. Detachably secured to the under side of the flexible bar 8 by means of screws 18 is a flexible file 19, which will flex according to the arc towhich the flexible bar 8 is flexed by the adjusting screw 14, thereforeit will be seen that the operator may easily and quickly adjust the files according to the surface being' filed, and by so adjusting a ace . smooth out ona concave or convex sur is obtained. a
From the above it will be seen that a file holder is provided which is simple in construction, the parts reduced to a minimum and the holder constructed in a manner whereby a file may be easily and quickly flexed inwardly or outwardly and held in flexed position for use on a convex or a concave surface, thereby overcoming the common difficult now experienced where a common flat le is used on a convex or concave surface.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:-
1. A file holder comprising a frame, a flexible bar carried by said frame, a flexible file carriedby said bar, and means for flexing the flexible bar.
2. A file holder comprisng a frame, a flexible bar having its ends loosely connected to the frame, means for flexing said bar, and ineans for attaching a file to said flexible 3. A file holder comprising a frame, arms carried by said frame, a flexible bar, said flexible bar having its ends loosely connected to the arms of the frame, means carried by the frame and cooperating with the bar for flexing the bar and holding the same in flexed position, and means for attaching a flexible file to said flexible bar.
4. A file holder comprising. a frame, arms carried by said frame, a flexible bar, spaced eyes carried=by the ends of the flexible bar, said armshaving their ends disposed between said eyes, pins extending through the eyes and the arms, said ins being loosely mounted in the eyes, an ac justing screw car ried by the frame and cooperating with the flexible bar whereby the same may be flexed and held in flexed posit-ion, and means for attaching a flexible file to the flexible bar.
5. A file holder comprising a U-shaped frame, arms carried by said U-shaped frame, a flexible file carrying bar, said flexible bar beingeloosely connected to the arms, means for attaching a flexible file to the flexible bar, an adjusting screw carried by the frame and pivotally connected to the flexible bar intermediate its ends, and a handle member carried by one of the arms of the U-shaped frame.
6. A file holder comprising a U-shaped frame, the arms of said U-shaped frame termmatmg 1n enlargements, a flexible bar,-
spaced eyes carried by the flexible bar, said enlargements being disposed between the spaced eyes, pins extending through the enlargements and having their ends loosely mounted in the spaced eyes. means for attaching a file to one side of the flexible bar, an adjusting screw threaded through the U-shaped frame, said adjusting screw being pivotally connected to the flexible bar, one of said enlargements terminating in a handle member.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
MICHAEL G: RIGGS.
