APPLICATION FILED` JULY 6, |914.

lCAPTAIN PERRY FUNK, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
COMBINATION SAW. AND TRY-SQUARE.
speciacauon of Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr. 2o, 1915.
Application led July 6, 1914. Serial N o. 849,157.
T all lwhom 'it may concern -Be it known thatAI, CAPTAIN PERRY FUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Saws and Try-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the same, ref' ercnce being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspecification.
This invention relates Ito new and'useful improvements in combination, tools, especially in the provision of a hand saw provided with suitable level and means for con-A verting the same into either an ordinary square or try-square and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying dra-wings and then specilically defined in the appended claim My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw showing a try-square attachment mounted thereon.` Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3
is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of fulcruming the end of thev adjustable try-square against a plate upon the saw back. Fig. l is a detail View of a plate having lugs on the ends thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail view of an angular try-square, and
' adapted to engage over the edge of the han-l Fig. 6 is a sectional View on line '6 6 of Fig. 2.
Reference now 'being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a hand saw provided with a handle B in which the spirit levels C and D are mounted at right angles to each other in recesses formed in the wall of the hand` opening E. The face of the blade adjacent to the handle is provided With. -a scale F having radial lines formed thereon, designating different degrecs and radiating from a common point H. Try-squares, designated eaeh by letter K, are mounted one upon either side of the handle and each try-square is angular and die as shown. T he upper edge of the Saw handle is recessedaway as at N, and O designates a plate which is countersunk in said .recess andv has its upper face flush with the -upper edge of the handle.
Other lugs, designated by letter 02, project from the forward edge of said plate and are bent at right angles thereto and are seated in recesses B formed in the forward end of the handle and against which the upper ends of the try-squares also fulcrum as they are tilted.
A laterally projecting wing K of each try-square is provided with a curved slot J, and I designates a' bolt passing through a-n aperture in the handle and through the two curved slots in the two try-squares, one upon either side of the handle. nut S is mounted upon the bolt and serves to hold the try-square attachments' in different adjusted positions.
In. operation, when the try-square upon either side of the saw is set at right angles to the rear edge of the Isaw, said try-square will fit over the' forward edge of the handle, while its upperend will engage the under surface of one of the lugs O. In this adjustment of the device, the tool may be utilized as a square. l/Vhen it is desired to adjust the try-square to different angles relative to the rear edge of'the saw, it may be done by loosening the nut upon the bolt and tilting the try-square with its inner end fulcrumed against a projecting lug upon said plate until. the desired adjustment is made, after which the winged nut may be tightened to hold the try-square in such adjusted position. As there are two of the try-squares, one on each side, it will be noted that eithersidc of the saw may be utilized in the same manner.
What I claim to be new is In combination with a saw and handle fixed thereto, a plate fastened to the upper edge of the handle and having a downwardly extending flange engaging the for- Ward end of the handle on either'side of the saw and slotted to receive the rear edge of the latter, 'said plate having lugs extending A suitable thumb ends of which bear` against said flange and the under edges of said lugs, each bar having a curved the outer face of the handle, and means for holding 'the bars in adjusted positions.
slotted arm bearing against In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CAPTAIN PERRY FUNK.
