PETER B. FERNANDEZ, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN AERIAL TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16L77l, dated April 6, 1875; application filed February 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PE ER B. FERNANDEZ, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Aerial Toy; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention Without further in vention or experiment.
My invention relates to a novel construction and arrangement of mechanism which I call an aerial toy; and it consists of a propeller mounted upon a shaft at one end of a horizontal arm, which arm is supported on a pivot at some point in its length, so as to be revolved about its vertical axis by means of the impetus given to it by the rotation of the propeller.
A suitable case is provided to hold the mechanism for rotating the propeller, and a counter-balance may be mounted at the opposite end of the arm.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of my device, for a more complete explanation of myinvention, A is a suitable standard, which has its upper end fitted to receive the horizontal bar B, and, by means of any anti-friction cap, this bar is allowed to revolve freely in a horizontal plane. From one end of this arm is suspended a case, 0, for containing a suitable clock-Work or mechanism for driving a propeller, D, the
shaft E of which extends out in front of thecase, and stands nearly at right angles with the arm B.
In the present instance I have made th case to represent a balloon, having a netting, and the car F is suspended beneath the balloon. When made on a large scale, the post A may be firmly set into the ground in a garden, and the ear F will then be made of a size suffieient to allow children, or even larger persons, to ride.
A counter-balance, Gr, may be suspended from the opposite and shorter end of the arm B, and this can be easily made movable and adjustable to the weight of the car, so that the arm B will be evenly balanced upon the post and revolve freely.
My propeller D will be light and of large size, and mounted upon a shaft, E, projecting from the front of the case or balloon O, and the mechanism for driving it can be wound up by hand when the apparatus is on a small scale; or an endless chain might pass over a pulley upon the winding-shaft and extend down to the car F, so as to be within easy reach and control by the occupant thereof.
Besides its use as a toy, or for riding, the apparatus may be made use of for an orrery.
Various modifications of my device may be employed, such as making a circular rim with a space for the propeller to revolve in, or two or more arms, each having a propeller, may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The apparatus consisting of the propeller D, With its driving mechanism, and the containing-case C, When mounted upon the arm B, so pivoted as to be susceptible of rotation in a horizontal plane, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
PETER B. FERNANDEZ. [L. s.]
