WIND-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,569, dated June 13, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCLAOHLAN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a wind-wheel provided with a turret for gathering and directing the wind upon the wheel; also, in a vanewheel combined with the turret for turning the same to the wind; and, further,it consists in certain novel features of construction, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved motor. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the turret at rightangles to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a face view of the vane-wheel. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sections.
The apparatus is supported upon a tower consisting of pillars d, at the top of which are brackets 12. The pillars and brackets are suitably braced, and on the brackets is fixed a ring or curb, f, that sustains the revolvingturretA.
g g are wing-boards fixed on the brackets e in an upright position and radially, and suitably braced at the top to form an inclosing frame for the turret. The turret A is a cylinder of sheet-iron, open at one side a distance somewhat less that half its diameter. To its lower edge is attached a cast-iron ring, it, in which rollers or wheels 1' are boxed, so as to support the cylinder. These rollers 2 rest on a ring-plate, i, of metal, fixed on the curb J", On the curb f, outside the turret, there are mounted rollers k, which impinge on the ring IL, and at the top of the wing-boards are similar rollers, it, that impinge on the outside of the turret, so that the turret is retained firmly in position. Within the turret are curved plates a, preferably four in number, and forming wind guides or deflectors, that direct the current downward, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 3.
C is the vane-wheel, sustained by suitable hearings in a frame, I, fixed on the top of the turret. Thei'rame 1 also sustains a short vertical shaft, 1, on one end of which is a wormwheelm, engaging a worm on the wheel-shaft, while the lower end of shaft 1 carries a pinion, m, engaging a cogged rim, m, that is fixed on the inclosin g frame of the turret. The wheel 0 is placed at the closed side of the turret. with its plane at right an gles to the plane of the opening in the turret, with the eifect that the vane-wheel, being turned by the wind, revolves shaft 1, and the pinion m, engaging ring m, travels on the ring, and thus the turret is revolved until the wheel 0 is edge to the wind and ceases to revolve, and the opening in the turret is presented squarely to the wind. This action is automatic at all times.
B is the motor wheel, which is of suitable construction, and sustained on a shaft, 0, beneath the opening in curb f, where it receives the current of wind entering the turret and deflected downward by guides at. p are the revolvin g fans of the wheel. q q are fixed guides, curving from the center of the wheel outward on a cone q, that is fixed over the center of the wheel. The guides q serve to give a circular motion to the wind and direct it upon the fans 9. For usewhen the wind is light, to gather the wind from an increased area, I provide the turret with sails E at the opposite sides and at the edges of the opening.
The construction is as follows: At the top of the turret arms 1' extend out horizontally to a suitable distance. On the outer edges of the win g-boards g are flanged or T plates 8, which may be in either of the forms shown in larger size in Figs. 5 and 6. The sails are canvas, and have attached to their inner edges loops t, that take upon the T-plates s, so as to slide thereon. The lower ends of the sails are attached to arms a, that are pivoted to the pillars (Z of the tower, so that when the sails are lowered the arms and sails may drop down against the pillars. To allow that movement the T-plates s are carried down to the pillars on curved supports 8. To the upper ends of the sails bars o are attached, from which ropes 20 pass over friction-rollers w or arms 7', and downward to a convenient place for use in raising the sails.
It will be seen that I use a motor-wheel of comparatively small size and concentrate and compress the wind upon it.
The apparatus is thus compact and not liable to be injured nor become unmanageable.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a wind-motor, the combination, with the motor-wheel B, of the revolving turret A, provided with an opening at one side, and with the downwardly-curved deflectors a, and arranged above the said motor-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wind-motor, the combination, with the curb f, provided with the rollers k, and the Wing-boards 9, provided with rollers 10, of the turret A, provided with the rollers 1', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a wind-motor, the combination, with the frame I, the shaft 1, the pinion m, the wormwheel n, and the vane-wheel O, of the turret A, provided with the coggcd rim m, substantiall; as and for the purpose set forth. I
4. In .a wind-motor, the combination, with the wing-boards g,provided with the T-shaped brackets e, of the sails E, provided with the loops t, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. Inawind-motor,thecombination,withthe wing-hoards g and the supports .9, provided with T-plates, of the sails E, provided with the loops t, the arms to, the bars v, and the ropes 20, substantially as and forthepurpose setforth.
6. In a wind-motor, the combination, with the revolving turret A, provided with the de flectors a, of the motor-wheelB, provided with the fans 19 and the fixed curved'guides q, arranged below the said turret, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
