Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
SIMON B. SIMON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAT'C'HCASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,712, dated April 6, 1875; application led March 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON B. SIMON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oylindrical Watch-Cases, of which the following is a speciiication:
Figure 1 is a front view of a watchy to which my improved Watch-case has been applied. Fig. 2 is a rear view ot the same, the outer case being removed. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the outer case. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line m x, Fi 3; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish watch-cases long and narrow or cylindrical in forni, and of such a size that they may be carried in the pocket, worn in a ladys belt, or worn as an ornament or charm.
The invention consists is a cylindrical watchcase, constructed as hereinafter fully described.
The works ot' the Watch may be the Works described in Letters Patent No. 76,108, granted to me March 3l, 1868, or the ordinary works made small, or any other desired Works.
The works are surrounded by an inner case, A, through the front of which is formed a hole or holes, to allow the hour and minute hands and the secondhand to be seen, which holes may be covered with crystals. In the back of the case A are formed holes, which, when the watch is a stem-Winder,77 as shown in the drawing, are made large, to give access to the button for setting the hands and to the balance-wheel. When the watch is not a steinwinder the holes in the back of the inner case A may be simply key-holes. B is the outer case, which is made with a closed lower end,
and is slipped upon the inner case A from its lower end. The case B is made with openings in front corresponding with the openings in the front of the inner case A.
The outer case B maybe made with a close back, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, or it may be provided with doors covering the openings or holes in the back of the inner case A. The case B may also be made with a door or doors, covering the front openings, if desired.
I prefer to make the case B in the forni of a attened cylinder, or elliptical in its crosssec tion, as being neater in appearance and more convenient for carrying in the pocket or wearing in a ladys belt.
rllhe case B may be made plain or ornamented to any desired extent.
Watch-cases constructed in this way require less material and less labor to make them, and are consequently much less expensive, than when made in the usual way. This construction also enables the cases to be made light and thin, as the cylindrical form gives them greater strength.
This construction of the case enables a lady to Wear her watch in her belt without any danger of springing the case or injuring the works, as there is danger of doing in the case of iiat circular cases, especially when the watch is made small and light.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cylindrical watch-case, constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
SIMON B. SIMON. Witnesses:
T. B. MosHEE, ALEX. F. RoBEETs.
