' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
POCKET FOR GARJVIENTS.
Application filed March 9, 19726. Serial No. 93,381.
The present invention relates to pockets, and one of the primary objects is to provide a novel structure, in which a safety receptacle or pocket is produced that will divide the ordinary pocket into two compartments and will conceal and effectively hold its own contents. As a consequence the main pocket is formed into a double pocket and when the partition itself is considered as a pocket, 10 the entire structure forms a triple pocket.
A further and important object is to provide such a safety pocket with means that will prevent the accidental discharge of its contents if the pocket as a whole is reversed, 15 and yet will give ready access to the interior, buttons and like securing devices being unnecessary.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying Z drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a pair of trousers, and indicating a pocket therein,
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the 26 blank of one of the safety pocket walls,
Figure 3 is a corresponding view of the other safety pocket wall,
Figure 4 is a view of the main pocket blank, showing the safety pocket walls in 3 place thereon,
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 5--5 and 66 of Figure 4,
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the completed pocket,
Figures 8 and 9 are sectional views on the lines 8-8 and 9*9, respectively, of Figure 7,
Figure 10 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 7, but reversed to indicate how the contents of the safety pocket are retained.
In the drawings, the main pocket may be formed of a single blank of cloth, providing main pocket walls 12 and 13, when the blank is double, as will be readily understood. The safety pocket consists of two walls 14 and 15, which are substantial duplicates in form, except that the wall 15 has an integral flap 16. This fap, as shown, is triangular in shape. and its free maii'gin 17 is preferably provided with a selvage edge, so that it will not ravel. The walls 14 Land 15 are placed flat against each other, as shown in Figure 4, and the fiap 16 is turned downwardly over the upper margin of the wall 14. The
shorter end walls are then sewed .to the blank 12, as indicated at 18, after which the wall 12 is folded over the wall 13 and a line of stitching 19 then secures the free edges of the walls 12 and 13 together, and also fastens in permanently the longer end edge of the downturned flap 16 yand the corresponding ends ofthe intermediate Walls 14 and 15. The completed pocket, as `thus produced, is illustrated in side elevation in Figure 7, and is shown in vertical and hori- Zonta] section in Figures 8 and 9.
It Will thus be evident that the downturned tapered flap 16 is permanently secured at its ends in downturned position.
As a consequence, and as will be clear by reference to Figures 8 and 9. the main pocket is subdivided by the safety pocket into two compartments 2() and 21, the upper ends of which are open, so that a hand introduced into the main pocket can readily find access to either compartment. Articles, as for example, paper money and coins, can be placed in these different compartments. The intermediate walls 14 and 15 besides creating the compartments 2O and 21, also form the intermediate safety pocket 22. The upper end of this pocket is obviously closed by the downturned flap 16, and this flap is permanently secured in its downturned position by having1 its ends sewed or seamed into the pocket structure. The tapering formation. however, permits ready access to the safety pocket at the narrower end of the flap, so that a person acquainted with the arrangement can readily gain access to the safety pocket 22 for the purpose of inserting articles into or removing them therefrom. Should any one, however, insert his hand into the main pocket for the purpose of surreptitiously removing the contents, the mouth of the safety pocket is concealed, and such person would not be apt to gain access thereto. A further advantage results from the tapered construction. By having the Wider end of the flap 16 at the rear side of the pocket, should the pocket be reversed, as often happens, for example in removing the trousers, the contents of the safety pocket will drop into the relatively deep end of the reverse pocket formed by the flap 16, as will be clear by reference to Figure 10.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, Without further description, and it will he understood that various changes in the size1 shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or saeriiioing any of the advantages of the invention.
What I claim is z* n l. A pocket for garments having side walls, a partition between the side Wallsand terminating' short ofthe tops of said side Walls, said partit-ion comprising doubled :walls forming: an intermediate pocket, and
a downturned flap within the pocket overhangingthe upper end of said intermediate ooket'and-havinolan end )ermanentl secured within the front pocket in downwai'dlv extendingposition to maintain the downturned position of the flap.
2.` A pocket for garments` having side Walls, a partltion between the side walls, said partition comprising doubled'walls forming an intermediate pocket, and a downturned flap over-hanging the upper end of said intermediate pocket. and-tapering from one end to the other.
3. A pocket for garments comprising side walls, partition Walls between the side walls and seamed thereto, forming an intermediate pocket and a downwardly extending flap overhanging the open mouth of the intermediate pocketv and permanently secured in downwardly .extending position` lforminga pocketl reversed to and overhanging the in-Y termediate pocket and having' a downwardi ly opening mouth, said'reversed pocket receiving the articles ofthe intermediate pookq etwhen the main pocket is reversed.
Intestimony whereof, I aiiix my signature.v
