My present invention relates to a 'writing pencil, and the same has for its primary object the provision of a writing pencil which will embody certain desired features of simplicity, efficiency and convenience and which will be economical in manufacture.

Another object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive lead pencil characterized by having a ,holder in which the lead may be readily replaced from time to time and in which the length of lead will be substantially'exposed so that it may be observed at a glance.

Still another object of my invention is to provide a lead pencil that is adapted to serve as a permanent advertising -medium, the stock or barrel being permanent in the sense that it is not necessary to Whittle it away inorder to obtain lead for writing, and the stock or barrel affording a surface for displaying advertising matter.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combina-' tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying draw-ing, forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, comprises a suitable stock Gwhich has an opening 7 extending inwardly from one end thereof. A ferrule 8 is preferably applied to the mouth of the opening and the same has a flange 9 formed t-ooverlie the end of the stock as shown.

-For oper-atively supporting the writing lead, I employ a'holder 10 provided with a shank 11 bent longitudinally in order to produce a hollow .or trough 12 for the accommodation of the follower to be hereinafter described. Said shank 11 fits within the opening 7 and is provided with suitable lugs orprojections'13 adapted to engage over the inner end of the ferrule 8, so as to prevent accidental withdrawal of the shank from the stock. The holder 10 is also provided with longitudinally extending side flanges 14 which preferably taper from the shoulders 15 toward a split ring 16. for-med between the flanges and adapted to frictionally hold a writing lead as 17. As best illustrated in Fig, 5, the flanges 14 are also curved transversely so as to provide a continuation of thehollow or trough 12. For oper-atively maintaining the length of lead while keepingit in view for observation at a glance, I provide between the flanges 14 a series of upper or top cross ribs 18 and a series of bottom or underneath cross ribs 19, both series of ribs being bowed so as to produce a passageway for the length of lead" 17 in alinement with the split ring 16, the top orupper seriesfof ribs representing the material from the slots 20 between the bottom or underneath ribs, and conversely, the bottom or underneath ribs representing the material from the slots 21 between the top or upper ribs. By this arrangement, I provide a passageway for the length of lead in alinement with the split retaining ring 16, and I also make provision for suitably exposing the length of lead so that it may be observed at a glance at any time,

One arm 23 of the follower extends into the passageway formed by the two series of cross ribs 18 and 19. so as to serve as an abutment for the length of lead 17 whereby to hold it in writing position. The other arm 2a of the .follower extends; across the bottom or underneath ribs 19 and has a detent 25 adapted to engage the bottom or underneath ribs 19 so as to prevent inner movement of the follower when the length of lead is subjected to the pressure of writing. When,

however, it is desired to move the follower inwardly of the stock for the purpose of inserting a new length of lead the detent 25 may be readily disengaged from the abutting rib by simply slipping the tip of a finger under the extremity 26 and moving said extremity in a direction away from the bottom or underneath ribs 19. Obviously, when the writing lead is to be advanced the detent 25 will slide over the bottom or underneath ribs 19.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be evident that the surface of the stock 6 may be utilized for advertising purposes, and that since the lead is replaceable, the stock will serve as a permanent advertising feature in the sense that it is not necessary to Whittle it away in order to obtain a writing point. Additionally, it will be evident that, under the arrangement disclosed, the length of writing lead, held be tween the two series of spaced cross ribs, is at all times open to the observation of the user. This is a distinct advantage since it enables the user to observe the condition of the writing lead at a. glance.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but de sire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross members arranged to form a passageway for a length of lead; and means for advancing the lead, substantially as described.

2. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross members arranged to form a passageway for a length of lead; and means associated with said flange for frictionally holding a length of lead entered in said passageway, substantially as described.

3. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross members arranged to form a passageway for a length of lead; said cross members being spaced to substantially expose the length of lead; and said side flanges tapering toward a point, substantially as described.

4. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross members arranged to form a passageway for a length of. lead; means for operatively holding the lead; and means for advancing the 1 ad, substantially as described.

5. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges conected by upper and lower cross ribs bowed to form a passageway for a length of lead, said cross ribs being spaced to substantially expose the length of lead; a follower extending into said passageway for advancing the lead; and means for holding the follower in adjusted position to prevent reverse movement of the lead under the pressure of writing, substantially as described. 6. A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross ribs arranged to form a passageway fora length of lead, said cross ribs being spaced to substantially expose the length of lead; a follower extending into said passageway for advancing the lead; and means on said follower arranged to coact with the ribs to prevent reverse movement of the lead under the pressure of writing, substantially as described.

7, A writing pencil comprising a holder characterized by having side flanges and connecting cross ribs arranged to form a passageway for a length of lead, said cross ribs being spaced to substantially expose the length *of'lead; a follower extending into said passageway for advancing the lead; an arm movable with the follower and arranged to cross the exterior faces of the ribs; and means on said arm arranged to coact with the ribs to prevent reverse movement of the lead under the pressure of writing, substantially as described.

8. A writing pencil comprising a stock; a holder having a longitudinally bent shank engaged within the stock and having. longi tudinally extending side flanges exteriorly of the stock; spaced cross ribs connecting said flanges to provide a passageway for a length of lead; a follower movable in the hollow of the shank and having an arm extending into said passageway to form an abutment for the lead and also having an arm extending across the exterior faces of the ribs; and means on the last mentioned arm aranged to coact with the ribs to prevent reverse movement of the lead under the pressure of writing, substantially as described.

9. In a writing pencil, the combination with a stock having an opening extending inwardly from one end thereof, of a holder having a shank applied to said opening and having side flanges exteriorly of said opening, said side flanges tapering toward a point; means associated with said side flanges for operatively holding a writing lead; and a follower for maintaining the lead in writing position slidably arranged on the holder and extending into said opening, substantially as described.

10. In a Writing pencil, the combination with a stock having an opening extending inwardly from one end thereof, of a ferrule applied to the stock at the mouth of said opening; a holder having a shank applied to said opening and ferrule; means on the shank eoacting on the ferrule to prevent withdrawal of the holder; side flanges on the holder for abutting the outer end of the ferrule; and connections between the side 10 flanges forming a passageway for maintaining a writing lead, substantially as described.
