which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same. I
This invention relates to pencils and particularly to adjustable lead feeding pencils, and the object of the invention is to provide a pencil of the class specified composed of a main tubular body and a lead carrying and feeding member movable longitudinally of said body with means rotatably mountedin connection with one end portion of the body for operating said member, said member being tubular in form to provide for the storage 'of extra leads; and'with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device ofthe class specified which is simple in construction and operation and and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a side and sectional view of a pencil made according to my invention.

The member 12 together with the plug 14 constitutes a lead feeding element and is provided at the lower end of the member 12 with laterally directed extensions 18 which operate in the grooves 8 of the body 5 to permit of the longitudinal movement of the member 12 in said body. The'member 12 or the chamber 19 therein is adapted to receive a number of additional leads 17 as clearly. shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The periphery of the member 12 is thread I ed as. shown at 20 to portion 21 on a rotatable member 22 mounted in the upper end portion of the body'5. The member 22 is tubular in form and the upper end of which projects beyond the body 5 and is closed by a head'or cap portion 23, beneath and at a predetermined distance from which the periphery-of the member 22 is provided with an annular head 24 in connection with which the beaded portion 9 operates to frictionally retain the member 22 in connection with the body 5.
In the position of the parts shown in Fig. 2, it will be understood that the lead 17 mounted in the holder or plug part 14 has been fully or subtsantially fullyextended and in order to insert a new lead the member 22 is rotated to move themember 12 upwardly into the member22, and longitudinally of the body 5, after which the member 22 is removed from thebody 5' by holding the body 5 in one hand and pulling on, the member 22 .to release the bead 24 'fromthe spring beaded portion 9. The plug 14 is then removed and one of the members 17 within the'member 12 removed and placed in the" spring jaw 16, bers 12 and 22 are again placed in the body 5 and the member 22 is rotated to project the new lead a sli ht distance beyond the tip or pointed end 0 the body'5. As the lead is worn down, the same is fed outwardly by the rotation of the member 22 one direcengage a threaded tion.

A pencil of the class described comprising a tubularbody portion, a member rotatably mounted in connection with one end portion thereof, means for retaining said member in predetermined position with I reference to said body, a lead feeding member in threaded engagement with said rotatable member and keyed to said body portion whereby the rotation of said first named member will move the second named member longitudinally of saidbody portion, said second named member being tubular in form and provided therein with a storage chamber for leads, and a plug controlling the admission to said chamber, said plug being provided at its free end with means for receiving and frictionally supporting a lead.

A pencil of the class described comprising a. tubular body portion, one end of which is conical in form and provided with a lead discharge aperture, said body portion being provided with longitudinal keyways, an externally threaded sleeve mounted in said body portion and provided with parts extending into said keyways to prevent the retation of said sleeve in said body portion and permitting of longitudinal movement therein, the other end portion of thetubular body I being open, -a tubular member rotatably mounted in connection with said end of the body and in threaded engagement with said externally threaded sleeve, and means detachably mounted in connection with and adapted to support a piece of lead in connection with said externally threaded member and in axial alinement with the aperture in said body portion, said last named means also serving to retain extra leads within said sleeve.

means for frictionally retaining the body portion and said rotatable member in predetermined relation, and said externally threaded member being provided with a lead storage chamber, closed by said lead supporting means. A
