IMPROVEMENT IN OBSTETRICAL SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,362, dated March 30, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM E. STAINBAOK, of Somerville, in the county of Fayette and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain Improvement in Obstetrical Supporters, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is intended as an improve ment upon the obstetrical supporter shown and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 149,261, granted to me March 31,1874; and it consists, first, in making the suspension-bars of the knee-supports adjustable in length, so that the knee-supports may be disposed at an elevation most convenient to the patient, according to circumstances; secondly, in providing the knee-supports with shields and straps, for the purpose of buckling them to the limbs of the patient, and thus hold them more steady than the knee-supports shown in my former patent above referred to.

The drawing illustrates, in perspective, my improvements, showing the complete apparatus; but in the description I shall confine myself to an explanation of the particular features constituting my invention, as stated in the above allegation.

The suspension-bars A A of the knee-supports B B are swung from the top cross-bar of the frame shown, and are combined with the draftcords and support for the back, the same as in my former apparatus. The suspension-bars are made in two parts, joined together, so that they may be lengthened and shortened as required.

In the example shown a tongue on the upper section of the bar enters a fork in the lower section, each section, at the joint, being provided with a series of holes.

After adjusting the bars to the desired length the joints are completed by passing pins through corresponding holes in the respective sections. From the face side of the knee-supports B, where they are properly padded, project shields O, which will partly embrace the limbs at the knee, so that the knees cannot slip off sidewise from the supports. Each shield is also provided with a strap, D, to pass over the limb and draw the shield firmly around the knee by connecting to a buckle, cl, on the other side of the shield, which is open at the top, as shown. A gap, 0, is also made in the lower part of each shield, so that the knee can pass into the shields and come in contact with the supports B.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an obstetrical supporter such as shown, the suspension-bars A, adjustable in length, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The knee-supports B, in combination with the shields O 0, provided with strap D and buckle d, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 1
