UNETED STATES 1,613,279 PATENT 'QFFIQE.
ARCHER L. KNAPP, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSTGNOE T PACKARD MO'IQR CAR COI/IPANY, 0F DETROIT, IVIICHIGAN, A CGRPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
I-II NGE FDR MOTOR VEHICLES.
Application filed August 30, 1923.
This invention relates to motor vehicles and particularly to hinge devices for the bodies thereof.
More specifically, the invention relates to hinge devices having a limited strap combined therewith.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a hinge with a limit strap which forms a part of the hinge.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge with recesses and with a limit strap adapted to be housed in the recess when the hinge is closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge with means for securing the hinge in place and with a limit strap which covers the securing means of the hinge.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken connection with the drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a motor vehicle body illustrating a hinge device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the hinge device shown in Fig. 1, the hinge being shown in partly open position;
F 3 is a part section and part plan view of the hinge shown in Fig. 2, the hinge be- 39 ing closed Fig. 1 is a transverse section on the line 4- l of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the end of one of the hinge leaves and a part of the limit strap.
Referring to the drawings, illustrates a vehicle body having the door 11 which is hinged to it. In the drawing the door is shown in open position.
At the upper part of the door is a hinge 12 of ordinary construction and at the lower part thereof is a hinge device embodying the construction of this invention. This device is indicated generally by the numeral 13.
In Fig. 2 the hinge device is illustrated in plan View and it comprises two principal parts or leaves 14 and 1 5 of substantially the .same form. These leaves are pivoted together at 16 by a suitable bolt and each of the leaves is formed with a recess 17 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and shown more clearly perhaps in Figs. 3 and 5.
Referring again to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the securing means for the hinge is arranged in the recess, this securing means Serial No. 680,072.
being in the form of one or more screws 18.
Thus the leaves of the hinge are secured to their supports, one lea-f being secured to the framework of the body of the vehicle and the other leaf being secured to the door 11.
A limit strap 19 is made a part of the hinge device. It is in the form of two plates of metal or other suitable material pivoted together at 20 and pivoted to the respective hinge members at 21. Thus the free ends of the limit strap 19 are pivoted to the free ends of the hinge but as the two leaves of the limit strap are shorter than the leaves of the hinge the strap will, of course, limit the opening movement of the hinge. This is clearly shown in Fig. 1 where the door is swung open to its fullest extent and the limit strap 19 prevents further opening movement of the door.
It will be seen also that the limit strap is so formed that when the spring is closed as shown in Fig. 3 it rests wholly within the recesses 17 of the hinge. Also, the recess 1? is so formed that a lug 22 is provided adjacent each of the pivots 21 .so that the limit strap 19 will be flexed very slightly as it reaches its straightened out position. This will cause the limit strap to be pushed in towards the hinge when the door is closed.
While I have herein described in some detail a specific embodiment of my invention, which I deem to be new and advantageous and may specifically claim, I do not desire it to be understood that my invention is limited to the exact details of the construc tion, as it will be apparent that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my what I claim and desire to Patent is:
1. A hinge device comprising two parts pivoted together, securing means for said hinge, and a limit strap connected to the hinge and adapted to cover said securing means when the hinge is closed.
2. A hinge device comprising two leaves pivoted together and-each having a recess, means in said recesses for securing the hinge to their supports, and a limit strap formed in two parts pivoted together and secured to said hinge so that they rest in said recesses and cover the securing means when the hinge is closed.
invention, secure by Letters 3. A hinge device comprising two parts parts pivoted together and having the free pivoted together, securing means for said ends of said parts pivoted adjacent the free hinge, and a limit strap comprising two ends of the leaves of the hinge, and means parts pivoted together and having the free at the connection of the limit strap to one o ends of said parts pivoted adjacent the free of the leaves for causing the limit strap 15 ends or" the hinge parts, said limit strap being to be pushed in towards the hinge pivot adapted to cover said securing means when when the hinge is closed. the hinge is closed. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
t. A hinge device comprising two leaves pivoted together, a limit strap having two I ARCHER L. KNAPP.
