LUCILE J. IBRICKEY, OF LQS ANGELES, CALIFGRNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED C. JOHNSON, GF LGS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. l
MASSAGE ROLLER.
Application led lGctober 5, 1925.
rihis invention relates to improvements in message devices.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved massage roller which can be caused to roll against the shin and which is of an improved construction having many advantages over similar devices heretofore provided.
TWith the 'foregoing and other objects in view which will he made manifest in the tollowing detailed description and specitically provided in the appended claims., reference is had to the accompanyinfigI drawings ior an illustrative embodiment of the inven i tion` wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation ot one -torni ot improved message device,
Fig'. '2 is a vertical section taken through the massage device shown in Fig. 1,
Fig'. 3 is an enh rejed vertical section taken on the line 3 3 ot Fin'. 1, and
Fig. l is a perspective view of a message roller ot a slightly niodiied construction.
-iieiterring to the accompanying' oinv l wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout., the improved massage roller consists or" an elongated roller body 10. which may be formed oi' wood, metal rubber. til er or any other desncd niaterial. Pins 11 are mounted upon thel ends ot the roller and have heads 12 which maintain sleeves or handles 13 thereon, so that the sleeves er handles 13 can rotate on t The ends oi' the pins 11 may be the provided with screw portions 111 for securing them to the roller.
i particular feature' ot the invention resides in the tact that l.Qjrooves or flutes 15 are formed lonnitudinallj,7 upon the surface of the roller., deiining projections ribs 16. The `grooves or iutes'l are preferably so formed that their bottoms are wider than their tops, causing the projections or ribs 16 to appear to be dove-tailed in cross sec tion, having their tops wider than their Serial No. 60,671.
Consequently, on moving` or rolling the roller the flesh or skin on being withdrawn :trom the flutes or grooves tends to produce a partial vacuum therein, thus lnoducingv a suction ei'iect on the skin and increasing the eti'ect ot the message. It will readily be appreciated that the improv-ed roller will eitectively and very advantageously stiinir late blood circulation and can be used for reducing; purposes. Attention is particularly directed to the tact that the side edges et the ribs 16 are not exactly radial from the center or axis ot the roller. in the prered form ot 5enstruction. the side ofi the ribs are preferably undercut. so as to be inclined slightly to radii from the center of the roller.
in the modication shown in Fig. l the roller 17 is similar in construction to the roller 1G and is provided with pins 18 similar to the pins 11. except that the pins 18 are much shorter. fr yoke is provided as indicated at 19 in which the pins are rotatable, and this yole carries a handlevZO. It will readily be appreciated that the device shown in Fig'. 4 is operable by one hand, while the device shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 requires the use ot two hands to operate.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail ot construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. ri. massage device comprising handle means, and a roller rotatably mounted thereony said roller having grooves or tintes formed on its exterior surface. said grooves or Flutes being` wider adjacent theirV bottoms than their tops.
2. A message device comprising an elongated roller, and handle means `tor moving said roller. said roller heini; provided with ribs extending' longitudinally ot the roller, which are wider adjacent their tops than adjacent their bottoms.
3. ln a message device, a roller having ribs formed longitudinally there-ot which appear to be dove-tailed in cross section.
In testimony whereotl l have signed my name to this specification.
LUCILE J. ERIC/KEY.
