MAGE INSTRUMENT.
Application med December 16, 1921. Serial No. 522,766.
To all whom t may concewz.:
Be it known that I, DOROTHY GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of N ew York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Massage Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
'I`he invention relates to hand-operated percussion devices, and the object o the invention is to provide an instrument of simlpale and hygienic construction especially deslgned for facial massage and adapted for self-use, in which the elements of weight, resilience, form and yieldingness .are combined to produce the desired invigorating results when applied to the surfaces to be treated. f
The invention consists in certain details of form and structure by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure 1 is a face View of the improved instrument.
Figure 2 is a corresponding side view. A
Figure 3 is a longitudinal central section taken on the line 3 3 in F igure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar section taken at a right angle to the preceding figure, on the line 4 4 in Figure 2, and partly in elevation.
Figure 5 is a transverse section through the pad or disk, takenon theiline 5--5 in Figure 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
The instrument comprises a circular percussion pad or disk mounted at one end Aof a resilient rod, provided with a handle at the other end, both disk and lhandle being of soft vulcanized rubber. The device is operated by graspin the handle and delivering light blows of t e face of the disk against the skin to induce the desired stimulation.
Referring to the drawings, A is the disk having a rounded edge and smooth slightly convex faces.. l It is preferably moulded and vulcanized directly upon a. metal socket B attened and shaped at one end to form a. circular late-C imbedded in the disk, as shown. el protruding end of the socket handle E also of soft rubber vulcanized upon the rod and having rounded ends.
The rod D aiords the desired resilience in producing the gentle impacts of the disk upon the surfaces to be treated, and the socket B with its plate C provides the additional weight required in the disk to insure the proper degree of force in such impacts.
All parts of the instrument may be easily cleaned and sterilized without damage; the smoothly rounded surfaces of the disk and handle .permit such cleansing to be eiciently accomplished either in the assembled condition or by unscrewing the rod and handle from the socket B and cleaning the separated parts independently.
1. The instrument described, consisting of a circular disk of soft rubber, a socket flattened to form a plate imbedded in and held within said disk and moulded and vulcanized therein and internally screw-threaded atits protruding end, said flattened plate being disposed parallel with the said disk a resilient rod adapted to be screwed into said socket at one end, and a soft rubber handlein which the other end of said rod is imbedded.
2. 'Ihe instrument described, consisting of a circular disk of soft rubber having convex faces and a smoothly rounded' edge, a socket iattened at one end to form a plate imbedded in and held within said disk and moulded and vulcanized therein and internally screw-threadedl at its protruding end, said plate being disposed parallel with the saidl disk, a resilient rod adapted to be screwed into said socket at one end, and a cylindrical soft rubber handle having smoothly rounded ends` in which the other end of said rod is imbedded.
In testimony 'that I claim the invention above set forth I alix my signature, in pres-y ence of two witnesses.
DOROTHY GRAY. Witnesses: n
