Description

6'. w; BRIGGS. EXERCISING AND MASSAGING DEVICET APPLICATION FILED AUG-21. I917.

EXERCISING AND MASSAGING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 29, 1918.
Application filed August 21, 1917. Serial No. 187,430.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Exercising and Massaging Device, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to a combined exercising and massaging device, one of its objects being to provide an efficient article which can be grasped in the hand and used in the same. manner as a dumb bell, the said device including a plurality of flexible tongues designed, during the manipulation of the device, to tap and thus massage the wrist and arm so that, at one operation, the device will operate both as a dumb bell and as a massaging device.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be used for the purpose of striking the body of a patient to set up an active circulation.
A still further object is to provide a de vice of this character which can be used as a flesh brush by oscillating it back and forth so that the opposed ends of the device will iccessively contact with the body.
A still further object is to provide an exercising device which is noiseless in use and which, if dropped, will not produce the objectionable noise which would occur under like circumstances should an ordinary dumb hell or like implement be used.
Another object is to provide an exercising device which can be used like an Indian club, one end of the device being grasped so that, when said device is used in the club swinging exercises, the other end thereof will strike the arms, back and shoulders or other parts of the body as li htly as des1red, thus to produce a massaging effect in connection with the club swinging exercise.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of What is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings: Fi ure, 1 is a perspective View of a combined exercising and massaging device such as constitutes the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the device.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a tubular body formed of soft rubber or the like and which is sufficiently large to constitute a grip. Extending therethrough is a cluster of rubber tubes indicated at 2 and which are designed to flex freely, these tubes being sufficiently stiff, however, to normally extend along slightly curved lines as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The frictional engagement of the strip 1 with the tubes 2 at the center thereof is sufficient to hold the parts properly assembled.
In using the device the grip 1 is held in the hand and the hand is turned rapidly from right to loft thus to set up a rapid oscillation of the device which will result in the flexing of the tubes 2 which will thus act as whips and tap upon the wrists and arm of the hand holding the device. \Vhile this is being done the user can go through a series of exercises similar to those performed with dumb bells. Likewise, if desired, the device can be given a similar movement so that the ends of the tube will strike upon the body of a patient thus to thoroughly massage the, body, the two ends of the device successively hitting the body, as will be obvious. As before pointed out the devices can be used as dumb bells, one of them being held in each hand and as each is made entirely of rubber, no objectionable noise would be made should one or both of them be dropped to the floor accidentally.
"While the device such as described is made of soft rubber it is to be understood that it can be formed of any other suitable elastic or soft material.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A combined exercising and massaging device including a grip and a plurality of flexible tongues extending from each end of the grip. i
2. A combined exercising and massaging U: meeem device including asoft flexible grip and In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1e tubular flexible members extending through as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signathe grip and projecting beyond the ends ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
thereof. I
3. A combined exercising and massaging device including a tubular flexible grip, and a cluster of flexible tubes heldtogether at their centers by the grip and projecting freely beyond the ends of the grip.
